Trapped Soul I
~ We often feel trapped in many things that the only freedom we search for is to not be seen ~

Mixed media installation
I worked on this piece during the surfaces workshop@afriartgallery
During this workshop, I explored an interactive medium of showcasing my work hence using a box to convey the emotion of being trapped.

@afriartgallery continues to be one of my favourite places in this country, with the Quiet Weight of Thoughts being an exhibition I resonated with, especially as a creative/poet myself, I could see myself projected in the weights that the art projected that let alone reminded me of the craziness we creatives go through to a point of almost giving up only to start a whole new piece again; not forgetting the balance between the weights of life pressures V the weight of individualistic pressures that sometimes stir to make a tea that is often very sour to taste. However, artists like Daniel Atenyi and Atugonza are a testament to what yields the beauty of consistency and trying to reach the finest of heights of the gift they/we are blessed with. An action that is a reminder for creatives like myself to tap into our greatest potential after all, the average human being uses only 2% of their brain power, and to be honest: I need not be average!
<I do hope you can tell a story through my visual story of some of my favourite pieces and people I met>

“ART X Lagos introduces African art to Africans. We get the opportunity to see and grow our knowledge of art being African, as opposed to European or American.”

We sat down with Daudi Karungi (@daudikarungi), Director of @afriartgallery based in Kampala, Uganda, to discover the diversity of Africa’s contemporary art landscape featured at #ARTXLagos2024.

“I am compelled to paint women because I am one and because I’m surrounded by some great ones,” Sungi Mlengeya.
Mlengeya’s paintings show women floating, sinking, or reaching through waves. Some are clear and strong, others fade into the water, becoming part of it. The movement of the water mirrors the emotions in each piece—calm, restless, free.

Water is always moving. It changes shape, reflects light, and carries memories. In "Tides of Being," Sungi Mlengeya explores how water connects to life, identity, and transformation. This exhibition is about change. It asks how we exist in our surroundings, how we let go, and how we find ourselves again.

When asked what she hopes viewers take away from ‘Tides of Being,’ Mlengeya says, “Anything they want. But I hope they lose themselves with these figures.”

Through an innovative blend of printmaking, charcoal drawing, and yarn, Ethiopian artist Kaleab Abate brings “fantasized realities” to life.

Abate embraces an intuitive process of layers formed on paper, fabric, and canvas, letting materials and print patterns guide his surreal compositions.

The result is fragmented bodily shapes and distorted forms that create complex visual narratives, mimicking the depths of the stories within.

Kaleab Abate was represented by Afriart Gallery at ART X Lagos.
