Africa was always this large. Now the world has voted to represent it more truthfully.

On 4 September 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted the African-led Correct the Map resolution by 164 votes to one.

This was a historic diplomatic achievement. African states did not wait for others to redefine the narrative. Led by Togo on behalf of the African Group, they identified the distortion, advanced a scientifically grounded solution, built a global coalition—and won overwhelming support.

The resolution is non-binding. It does not redraw borders or ban the Mercator projection, which remains useful for navigation. But it establishes a powerful international norm: when maps are used to compare the size of continents, Africa should no longer be visually diminished.

The vote was the victory. Implementation is now the responsibility of all of us.

Look at the maps hanging in our classrooms.
Open our children’s atlases and geography books.
Examine the maps used by media, publishers and public institutions.
Ask which projection they use—and why.

Switzerland voted yes. Now we must ask what that vote will mean in Swiss schools, teaching materials and public spaces.

Share this story. Check your schoolbooks. Speak to teachers and publishers. Challenge inherited representations with facts. Because correcting the map also means correcting what generations have been taught to see as large, central and powerful.

This is more than a cartographic correction. It is an African-led shift in knowledge, representation and global agenda-setting.

The world voted. Now the real work begins.
