BLACK ARTISTS BUILT THE CULTURE. BUT WHO OWNS THE MACHINE? 👀🎶

That’s the conversation nobody wants to have.

We celebrate Black executives, Black artists, Black labels, billion-dollar deals and “ownership” headlines. But an imprint isn’t necessarily an independent record company. Distribution isn’t ownership. A partnership isn’t control.

And if somebody else controls the distribution, financing, catalog, radio relationships, streaming leverage and corporate infrastructure, how much power do you REALLY have?

Motown became one of the most important Black-owned music companies in American history. Then it was sold.

So here’s the uncomfortable question:

Did Black music gain influence while losing ownership?

Because dominating the culture and owning the infrastructure that monetizes the culture are two VERY different things.
