Happy World Mental Health Day! 💚

Some photos from our annual Mental Health for Minorities Matter event, which brings together our community for open, stigma-free conversations about mental health.

We were honored to welcome Queens Deputy Borough President Ebony Young and New York State Director of Asian Affairs Sibu Nair, who joined our Executive Director Shreeya Tuladhar to share valuable insights into city and state resources available for our communities. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and learn more about where to turn for support. We were also grateful to have renowned DPT Dr. Imrul Kabir lead a mindfulness and movement workshop, highlighting the important connection between our physical and mental well-being.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners for their continued support and commitment to our communities: @elmhursthosp @afspnational @afspnyc @nycimmigrants @queensbprichards @liveonnewyork and @adhikaar_ny

At MiEN, we are committed to creating welcoming, culturally responsive spaces where our communities feel seen, heard, and supported in their mental health journeys. We are grateful to everyone who joined us in breaking down stigma, building connections, and reminding one another that no one has to navigate life’s challenges alone.

💚 Need support? If you or someone you love is experiencing emotional distress or a mental health crisis, you are not alone. Call or text 988 for free, confidential support, available 24/7.

For World Mental Health Day, my " WHY" is 365. 🦋💙

Not just because I LOVE the Blue Morpho, but because I am a suicide loss survivor. Experiencing suicide loss at the magnitude I have changed my life, my art, and how I show up in community.

When I first started these pages, I said art saved my life. In many ways, it did. It gave me somewhere to put pain that was difficult to explain and helped me navigate grief while continuing to create.

But my art was never the whole story.

Some follow me for my art. Others know me through the community pages I share, the organizations I support, events I promote, or resources I repost. There is a reason all these worlds coexist here. The artist, the advocate, and the loss survivor are not three separate people. They are all me.

Suicide prevention is about more than one walk, fundraiser, or conversation. The factors affecting our well-being are complex: food insecurity, poverty, violence, discrimination, isolation, war, and so much more.

I support and uplift people and organizations doing meaningful work in community to address these challenges, foster connection, and create spaces for wellness. Some may not see the connection to suicide prevention, but I do. Their work inspires me every day.

Tomorrow, I'll walk with our AFSP Team Bronx Honors It's Own with my bestie and the lovely Kaylana @thefreestorebronx our team is inspired by the honor bead colors and the lives and experiences they represent. The colors in our tie-dye banner carry meaning, remembrance, and connection. But this walk is one part of our WHY, not the entirety of it.

My commitment doesn't begin in September for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and it doesn't end when the walk is over or the fundraiser closes.

We create. we advocate. we share resources. we amplify community. I use creativity to help foster connection, wellness, and conversations we too often find difficult to have. If you've ever wondered why an artist's page includes more than art, now you know. The advocacy is part of the story.

The walk is one day. The WHY is 365. 🦋💙 Thank for watching.

Some gifts stay with us for a lifetime. 🤍

Over twenty years ago, when I moved to New York City, Kristen Mangione gave me my first opportunity to dance professionally here in this great big city. She believed in me. Words cannot express how deeply grateful I am for that gift, for her, and for the work she continues to share with the world.

On November 1, Kristen will perform her solo, Broken, at Artists in Motion. Having her with us means more to me than I can say.

As I get older, I have said goodbye to so many dear friends, colleagues, and mentors. Their absence has changed me. I know there will be more goodbyes ahead, and sometimes that knowledge alone makes my heart ache.

We all experience loss. We all carry something tender. It is part of being human.

Thank God for artists like Kristen, who give heartbreak a language. Her work invites us to consider how being broken might open us into another realm—how grief might become movement, and movement might make room for healing.

Kristen, you opened a door for me all those years ago. I am so grateful to welcome you to this stage now.

I cannot wait to experience Broken. I hope you will join us, bring your own tender heart, and see what this work opens in you. 🤍

Sometimes, the battles that hurt us the most are the ones nobody sees.
Behind closed doors, people are fighting battles we may never see like abuse, depression & grief but nobody should have to fight to survive that alone. I’ve had to learn how to keep moving forward while carrying that same traumatic experience- something that still hurts, including forgiving myself for not being as present as I should’ve after losing someone to suicide 💔

That journey became expressed through music as a way to cope & recognize strength the meaning behind my song “EYE SEE U.” It’s about seeing beyond what people show you. Seeing the person underneath the silence, the contidence, the smile, or the strength they feel they need to perform for everyone else.

That’s why I’m walking with @afspnyc to help others turn to community, connection, education, research, advocacy & most importantly hope.

A glimpse inside today’s rehearsal ✨

“The Shadows,” a section of A Veteran’s Journey, is taking shape—exploring the echoes of war, the weight of memory, and the search for light through movement.

Still unfolding. Still discovering. A work in progress, held with care by the artists bringing it to life.

Original music by Wendy Griffiths, supported by a NYSCA Support for Artists award, sponsored by Alison Cook Beatty Dance.

In partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, NYC Chapter.

Four years of Crafting & Conversations with Lindsey and Friends to help end the mental health stigma in memory of my brother Jay. If we help one family, one person, make one small difference…it’s worth its weight in gold. Thank you to all who contributed/came/participated from the bottom of my heart. If you are still wanting to help… visit my link in bio and donate to Ian’s marathon run in memory of Jay to raise money for the same organization @afspnational @afspnyc . And if you came…how much fun is it to unplug, craft, and listen to inspiring convo. Let’s do it again soon?!
