POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Sherese Francis is an Afro-Caribbean-American poet and interdisciplinary artist who works with a variety of mediums, including text art, collage, assemblage, sound and performance art. Much of Sherese's work is influenced by studies in Afrofuturism and Black Speculative Arts Movement, as well as Caribbean heritage (Dominica and Barbados).

Sherese has published in a variety of journals, such as The Caribbean Writer, Intersect Antigua-Barbuda, African Voices and Obsidian; has published four chapbooks; and edited a poetry anthology/guided journal, Baby Suggs and a Purple Butterfly.

In addition to publications, Sherese has showcased work at and performed in a variety of spaces, including Flux Factory, Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA), Ely Center of Contemporary Art and LMCC Gallery. In 2024, Sherese won Inverted Syntax's Aggrey& Tabbikha Poetry Book Prize for the poetry collection, PollyNation: A Seminary of Self, inspired by Black and Caribbean diasporic identity. PollyNation will be released in the Fall of 2026.

Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year is an exciting initiative led by Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage. Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.

Thursday, at CARA💫 October 8 at 7pm we celebrate the *launch* of 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘦,: 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺, 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘬𝘺, co-published with the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University (@icavcu ).

The evening will include performances by Mario Gooden and Sherese Francis (@afutureancient), and a conversation between Gooden, Jasmine Weber (@jasmineweber), and curator and editor Amber Esseiva (@amberesseiva).

Collaging spoken text, embodied movement, and moving image, Mario Gooden’s performance “‘Made in America’: There Is No Such Thing as African American Architecture” explores how the spatial practices of Black liberation unfold on bodily, architectural, geological, and cosmological scales. A conversation between Gooden, Jasmine Weber, and curator and publication editor Amber Esseiva will follow, exploring Amaza Lee Meredith’s life, work, and the reverberations of her legacy in contemporary practice. The evening concludes with an experimental ritual reading and sonic poetic performance by Sherese Francis drawing on the publication and an expanded world of references.

Grateful to @olivewitch and @theworldsboroughbookshop for bringing us together for poetry and community and this official @bkbookfest bookend event. As I said last night, Queens writers make the most generous literary space, and I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without their community. @jaredharel @aminad1a @m_a_dennis575 @anandalima @kctrommer @afutureancient Nadia Misir, Sahar Romani, Abeer: that I get to make poems alongside you is such an honor and a delight.

Snaps and snippets 👁️ from “A Fantasy of Having Home” at @flux_factory

Diving into personal history to inform the present, bringing pre-1987 taiwan into 2026 usa. Having a thought that as a collective people, we are all carrying some piece, remnant, sense, spirit, of stories, resources, strategies, roadmaps, of liberatory legacies. It only makes sense to offer and receive and share notes with one another.

Many thanks and appreciation to @flux_factory @kamaricarterstudio @kennedyhollins @afutureancient 🙏🙏🙏
