Business leaders, outdoor industry pioneers, and local chambers of commerce from across Colorado are uniting in support of Proposition 137. Colorado’s outdoor recreation sector is an economic powerhouse, contributing $18.1 billion to the state’s annual GDP and sustaining over 137,000 jobs. But the industry has yet to reach its full potential, as evidenced by the tens of millions of dollars in annually unfunded grant requests to the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office (OREC) for local needed infrastructure, conservation, and workforce development.

Prop 137 addresses these critical needs by channeling existing sales tax revenue from sporting goods and outdoor equipment sales to conservation and outdoor recreation. Crucially, the measure establishes an estimated $4.3 million per year in dedicated grants for the Colorado OREC office to advance economic development, education, and workforce training across the state.

A savory, cozy little jar of goodness made with nutritional yeast, garlic, onion, celery seed, turmeric + salt. Add it to soups and stews, stir it into a mug of hot water for an instant broth, or use it anywhere you’d normally reach for bouillon.

The Labor Day Challenge: Draw the Line

This Labor Day, stop participating in the illusion. Turn this holiday back into a day of real action, solidarity, and intentional sacrifice.

THE RULE FOR THIS WEEKEND:
Do not buy a single ounce of meat from a major grocery chain, big-box store, or corporate distributor.

You might ask: How do I even know if meat came from a Big Four processing plant?

The uncomfortable truth is, behind the fancy labels and pastoral packaging at mega-grocers, you usually don’t. They intentionally obscure the supply chain. So instead of guessing games at a supermarket counter, eliminate the middleman altogether.

What to Do Instead:
Visit a Farmers Market or Farm Stand: Take a drive to a local farmers market or road-side farm stand. While many independent ranchers offer home delivery during the year, a holiday weekend is the perfect time to visit in person, shake the producer’s hand, and buy directly from the people who raised the animal and cared for the land.
Find a Neighborhood Butcher or Regional Farm Co-Op: Seek out independent butcher shops that transparently source from local pastures. Put your dollar directly into the hands of a local business rather than a corporate conglomerate.
Shop Local Independent Grocers & Enforce the “State Line Rule”: Skip the mega-chains and look for small, locally owned grocers that stock regional goods. If your food wasn’t grown, harvested, or raised within your state or immediate region, leave it on the shelf.
Or... Don’t Buy Meat at All This Weekend: If you are concerend with the cost, make an intentional sacrifice and skip it entirely. Fill your board and grill with vibrant local produce—heirloom tomatoes, fresh stone fruit, regional cheeses, and sourdough bread. Show the food cartels that your appetite isn’t captive to their supply chain.

Most people think high beef prices are just a supply chain hiccup and that a temporary 90-day tariff fix on imported beef is the answer…

It’s a band-aid

Behind almost every package of meat in America sit just four massive corporations: JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill, and National Beef (owned by Brazil’s Marfrig).

The real crisis isn’t just checkout prices. It’s infrastructure control.

These four giants own the slaughterhouses, control the logistics, and squeeze independent ranchers out of the market. When a handful of players own the choke points from pasture to plate, they dictate what farmers get paid and what you pay.

The Bottleneck: Ranchers have nowhere left to process their cattle.

The Illusion of Choice: Dozens of grocery store “brands” funnel into the exact same corporate pipeline.

The Impact: Record corporate profits while family farms disappear.

Knowing who holds the infrastructure is the first step toward fixing our food system.

Yes, we spend many mornings foraging through the woods and playing in the garden…..that’s how we decide what’s on the menu!
