Our sold-out Spirits of Mexico tasting was everything we hoped it would be—and then some!

An incredible evening of discovery, conversation, laughter, and, of course, some extraordinary spirits.

From gin to tequila, sotol to mezcal, we explored the people, places, traditions, and craftsmanship behind every pour.

To everyone who joined us, our fellow educators, and everyone who helped bring this experience to life—THANK YOU! You made the evening truly special.

That time I met the incredible @sophiedecobecq for breakfast in Guadalajara.

She told me she had some very special samples to try and made sure to tell me not to eat beforehand because we needed fresh palates. So there we were at like 7:30 in the morning, tasting some absolutely insane aged tequila that would eventually be blended together to become the @tequilacalle23 Criollo El Dos. An añejo-forward blend with extra añejo and a touch of reposado, all made from Criollo agave.

A few months later Sophie was in Massachusetts and we met back up. She gave me these incredible pieces of artwork by Rose Guerrero that would eventually become the label for the finished bottle.

Sophie, I know how long you’ve been working on this and how much this release means to you. It’s incredibly special stuff and I’m really happy to see it finally out in the world.

Now that you’ve seen the Amor y Perros Fortaleza (Los Abuelos) bottle in the last post, here is the original bottle from the wedding next to the one that was released to the public. Fortaleza is the hottest tequila on the market and people hunt tirelessly for the Winter Blend bottles. But are they the holy grail? If you haven’t seen it, let me introduce you to Los Abuelos Amor y Perros Reposado Lote 114R. It’s bottled at 41.6% and is a blend of sherry cask 18 month añejo and American oak Reposado. This was a Mexico only release of 960 bottles. The bottle was originally made for a personal wedding. The remaining bottles were sold to help local dog rescue centers here in Mexico. Fortaleza Blanco | Lot 290 🥃

Tried this one at the Agave Matchmaker Tahona Tour in Tampa, and it was easily a standout for me.

The nose has an interesting woody quality alongside cooked agave, with just a touch of citrus and lavender adding some brightness and softness. On the palate, it’s remarkably smooth and easy to sip, with the agave remaining at the center of everything.

I really, really liked this one. It’s exactly what I want from a sipping blanco: expressive enough to be interesting, but balanced and smooth enough that you simply want another sip.

On October 24 at Cassy’s Underground in Parker, we’re going beyond the usual suspects and getting into the spirits that tell a much bigger story: tequila, mezcal, sotol and Mexican gin.
