Soil research is most valuable when it reflects the real challenges you're seeing in the field. In this episode of The Dirt PodKast, Lyle Cowell is joined by Dr. Chantel Chizen, Assistant Professor of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan, to discuss her new research group, @dig_soilscience. Chantel explains how conversations with growers have helped shape the group's priorities and keep its research connected to the field. Explore what the group is investigating, from prairie wetlands and low-yielding areas to soil carbon and soil variability, and how digital tools are supporting that work. Tune in at the link in bio. 🎧

Many thanks to Dr. Stewart, her assistants and @agbiousask students who came out to Wanuskewin to unleash their inner beaver, and help Wanuskewin construct a Beaver Dam Analog (BDA)! 🦫🪵 These BDA’s are an attempt to encourage beaver damming at specific predefined locations. As we are never going to be as good at building dams as the beavers are naturally, the goal is to provide a “starter” dam that an enterprising beaver can then take over management and start constructing their own dam overtop! This BDA also serves an additional purpose: controlled flooding. Retaining ponds created from beaver dams are well-known to be hotspots of biological activity and biodiversity, and we’ve chosen this location in particular to help flood a section of the opimihāw creek. This flooding will not only remove many pesky invasive species, but will support additional riparian/aquatic plantings that will go a long way to providing optimal habitat for all number of creatures, ranging from arthropods to fish, muskrats to minks, herons to shrikes and everything else that depends on the creek for their survival in the great outdoors! Again, many thanks to Dr. Stewart and the entire SLSC 450 @usask class 👏❤️ Your hard work has gone a long way to support the various plants and animals that call Wanuskewin home!

Long before fences divided the landscape, fire and grazers moved across the prairie together, influencing where plants grew, where animals gathered, and how the landscape changed over time. Indigenous Peoples understood these relationships long before modern land-management practices emerged, recognizing that animals, plants, fire, and people are all connected. This World Animal Day, we’re reflecting on a bigger question: When animals and fire are part of the landscape, what can their relationship teach us about caring for healthy, resilient grasslands today? Sometimes, looking forward starts with remembering how the prairie has always worked. #WorldAnimalDay #PrairieGrasslands #PrescribedFire #GrasslandConservation #IndigenousKnowledge PrairieEcology LandStewardship CanadianPrairies Biodiversity The Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange is funded by the Weston Family Foundation through the Prairie Grasslands Initiative and managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority

Our working landscapes don’t end at the city limits, and neither does our responsibility to manage them effectively.  Join us for the inaugural webinar of the Urban Prescribed Fire Working Group, bringing together practitioners, land managers, researchers, municipalities, and community partners to explore the role of prescribed fire in and around urban landscapes.  Together, we’ll focus on three key areas:  -Wildfire Risk Reduction  Advancing safe, proactive fuel management to strengthen communities in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).  -Ecological Restoration  Supporting the restoration and resilience of fragmented urban natural areas and native ecosystems.  -Collaborative Governance  Building stronger partnerships among agencies, municipalities, practitioners, researchers, and communities.  This kick-off webinar is an opportunity to connect, share knowledge, identify priorities, and help shape the future of the Urban Prescribed Fire Working Group.  Thursday, October 29, 2026  9:30–10:30 AM Saskatchewan Time / 10:30 AM CST  Online via Zoom (link provided upon registration)  Register: https://forms.gle/R2CCMvLXtJXX7fYk8   #UrbanFire #PrescribedFire #FireExchange #WUI #CommunityResilience WildfireMitigation LandStewardship EcologicalRestoration CollaborativeConservation    The Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange is funded by the Weston Family Foundation through the Prairie Grasslands Initiative and managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority.

Fire with Purpose on the Kernen Prairies Today, the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture and Bioresources, Department of Plant Sciences brought the science and practice of prescribed fire to life at the Kernen Prairies. Led by Dr. Eric Lamb and his students, and supported by the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange (CPPFE), the burn brought together seasoned practitioners and first-time participants, undergrads from the University of Saskatchewan for a hands-on day of learning and stewardship. From experienced fire leaders with dozens of burns behind them to greenhorns holding a flapper for the very first time, every crew member played a critical role. Armed with drip torches, leaf blowers, UTVs, and a strong respect for weather conditions and safety protocols, the team worked together to apply one of the prairie’s most powerful natural management tools- Prescribed Fire with a commitment to healthy grasslands, resilient ecosystems, and safer communities. In a couple of weeks, participants attending the Wildland Fire Canada Conference maybe returning to this site to witness the prairie's remarkable recovery and learn how fire helps shape these landscapes, as part of the conference tour. Register for the Wildland Fire Conference Here: https://wildlandfirecanada.com/registration/ Swipe through to see the action and stay tuned for recovery updates. #PrescribedFire #PrairieStewardship #Grasslands #CPPFE #USask #WildlandFire #PrairieConservation #research The Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange is funded by the Weston Family Foundation through the Prairie Grassland Initiative and managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority.

Strong fire programs are built on diverse perspectives. Successful prescribed fire and conservation initiatives rely on collaboration across disciplines, backgrounds, and experiences. When people with different skills, knowledge systems, and viewpoints work together, they strengthen decision-making, improve safety, and create more effective outcomes on the landscape. Renny Grilz, Director of Conservation at Meewasin and Managing Partner at CPPFE, shares that fostering a culture of belonging is essential for building resilient teams. Inclusive teams are better equipped to adapt, solve complex challenges, and advance conservation goals. In the world of prescribed fire, bringing together practitioners, land managers, researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders, ranchers, and community partners helps ensure fire is applied safely, effectively, and in ways that support ecosystem health. How does your organization create opportunities for diverse voices and perspectives to contribute? Share your thoughts below. 👇 #PrescribedFire #Conservation #FireManagement #EcosystemHealth #Leadership #Inclusion #Collaboration #PrairieConservation #WildlandFire #FireCulture #westonfamilyfoundation The CPPFE is funded by the Weston Family Foundation through the Prairie Grassland Initiative and managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority.
