Our team reimagined a 1970s hangar for the RAF Museum in London, part of a wider masterplan that replaced a car-dominated layout with a central green, clearer routes and renewed exhibition and visitor buildings for the RAF Centenary. The largest intervention reuses the hangar as the museum’s new entrance, main galleries and visitor centre. The industrial exterior is retained, and a new 40-metre cantilevered roof canopy signals the drama within, its aerofoil profile referring to the aircraft collection. Inside, we reconfigured the exhibition spaces around a Sunderland flying boat too fragile to move during construction, opening up views across the site without disturbing the collection. A new red pavilion at the heart of the hangar houses a shop, café and flexible event spaces, offering a backdrop to the historic airframes beyond.
