⚓️👻THE HAUNTING OF AVIS LOVELOCK by MK Hardy - in this historical supernatural mystery, set on the eve of the Spanish American war, sapphic sparks fly when a professional sceptic and a spiritualist go head to head on a "haunted" Atlantic cruise ship! Buy now: https://geni.us/avisl "Avis Lovelock is a professional sceptic. Using her sharp insights and powers of observation, she sets out to debunk every nefarious spirit medium and psychic she can find. When American businessman Carlton Brooksbank invites her aboard the ocean liner Excambion to take her skills to America, Avis discovers she has been hired to prove to potential buyers that the vessel is not haunted. As she begins her investigations, she runs afoul of the famous twin spiritualists onboard, Gideon and Rachel Duquesne. They are her polar opposites, and Rachel especially has a knack for getting under her skin. The more Avis works to discredit her adversaries and absolve the ship of its haunted reputation, the more she starts to have visions of water filling her cabin, drowned bodies on decks, and flickering lights on the sea. Then someone is found dead. To discover the truth, Avis must join forces with her opponents, and confront some haunting secrets of her own."

Buy now from all good booksellers! A Scottish, sapphic, gothic where a new bride arrives at her husband's home to find it oozing with atmosphere and crackling with tension. You are afraid of the fork in the road. Fleeing her mistakes in Glasgow for a marriage of convenience, Norah Mackenzie’s new home on an estate far in the north of Scotland is a chance for freedom, a fresh start. But in the dim, draughty corridors of Corrain House, something is very wrong. Despite their warm correspondence, her distant, melancholic husband does not seem to know her. She is plagued by ghost ships on the sea, spectres at the corner of her eye, by winding, grasping roots. Her only possible companion, the housekeeper Agnes Gunn, is by turns unnerving and alluring, and harbours uncanny secrets of her own. As the foundations crumble beneath her feet, Norah must uncover the truth about Corrain House, her husband, Agnes, and herself, if she is to find the freedom she has been chasing." #mkhardy #theneedfire #scottishsff #horrorreads #rebecca #daphnedumaurier #sapphic #gothic #gothicromance #darkfantasy #gothicreads #scotland #sapphicromance #gothichorror #queergothicreads #britishfantasysocietyawards #britishfantasysociety #sapphichorror #scottishhorror #thehauntingofavislovelock #spookyseason #spookreads #besthorror #besthorrornovel #besthorroraward #besthorrornovelaward

Fun fact: being photographed in my tarot card aesthetic is clearly shown to increase your chance of being awarded the Ursula Bethell writing residency by a not insignificant amount. Thrilled to be spending the first half of next year working on some words at the university. Not bad work, clown. Not bad at all.
