Shout-out to my hostels rat 🐀 God bless Tesco's meal deal. Fun fact #1: English is basically 5 languages: Germanic, Scandinavian, Latin, French and Greek. Originally it was a Germanic language called old English. But old English is so different that it would be impossible for a modern English speaker to understand. Most basic day to day English words are Germanic. Then the Vikings started coming in 793 and introduced Scandinavian/Norse words. This also simplified plural for trade. Now we just add an s, for example: rock or rocks. But there used to be plural forms for 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. and words had their own unique versions as well. Some words could have 10+ plural versions. But that's stupid, and if you're trading with a Viking and you miscommunicate amounts, you might die. Also, every noun used to have a gender, like Spanish or French. But that's also dumb and the vikings made us drop that. And over time, due to both the Romans who created London (Londinium) and the Catholic Church which took over education during/after the fall of Rome, tons of words are Latin. Also the Romans, who just copy/pasted Greek into latin introduced many Greek words, like democracy. And then William the Conquerer (French) invaded in 1066. So now all the upper class words in English are French, like parliament, literature, banquet, etc. in fact, roughly 30% of English words are French. So if you're speaking informally, you're basically speaking Germanic English. If you're speaking in a sophisticated/formal way, you're speaking French/Latin English. Fun fact #2: You can use this to tell if someone's lying. People telling the truth usually use Germanic English. However when someone lies they often want to sound more convincing and intelligent so they tend to use French/Latin English. #london #uk
