🚨FROM CULTURE TO CRISIS: When Festivals Become Sites of Abuse🚨 The recent sexual assaults and harassment of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro have exposed a disturbing trend: cultural practices and festivities being weaponized to perpetuate human rights abuses targeted at women and girls. Culture should celebrate us, not violate us. Join the South-South SGBV Info Hub and Gender and Development Action for a critical webinar as we put a rights-based lens on this issue: TOPIC: Centering Women’s Rights in Addressing SGBV Witnessed in the Alue-Do Festival 📅 Thursday, 30 April 2026 | ⏰ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM WAT 📍 Google Meet: Link in Bio Moderator:_ Inyingi Irimagha Speakers: Ayo Nefertiti Adjarho | Amb. Dr. Eris Jewo-Ibi | Amb. Caroline Usikpedo-Oliseowe | Martha Onose This discussion is urgent for women’s rights organisations and Civil Society Organisations to tinker around these fundamental questions. How do we protect traditions while dismantling practices that enable violence? How do we center survivors and demand accountability without erasing culture? Your voice matters. If you’re concerned about Sexual and Gender Based Violence, women’s rights, and holding harmful practices to account, be in the room.

I was glad to reunite with Mummy @aginaude again, on Thursday, 22 years after our first meeting in Lagos. In 2003, shortly after the general elections, as the Executive Director of Concerned Professionals, mummy and I were participants at the review workshop organised by the then Angela Odah-led Transition Monitoring Group for partners that observed the elections. Her NGO, GADA, and CP were among the partners that participated in the workshop. We had not met again physically until Thursday although we virtually interacted. And our reunion was at the instance of my friend, Isa Sanusi, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, during the relaunch of the group's report on killings in South-East Nigeria by state and non-state actors. The feeling was mutually ecstatic. Thanks for all you do for the development sector especially in gender activism, Ma.

Revisiting Women in Politics & Leadership This Women’s HERstory Month, we are revisiting our past work on gender issues—highlighting the challenges, progress, and solutions for women’s participation in governance. This week, our focus is on women in politics and leadership, and today, we take a look at our report: Women’s Representation in Nigeria’s Leading Political Parties by Ada Agina-Ude & Mufuliat Fijabi, PhD This report was part of The 20 Years of Democracy in Nigeria, Getting Women Elected Series, examining the role of major political parties—APC, PDP, LP, and NNPP—in shaping women’s participation in Nigerian politics. Key Themes: - Where are the women? Despite efforts at inclusion, women remain sidelined in internal party structures and electoral candidacies. - Party quotas vs. reality – Many parties claim commitment to gender inclusion, yet few enforce quotas or support female candidates financially. - Regional disparities – Women’s participation varies across regions, with lower representation in Northern Nigeria due to cultural and systemic barriers. - Barriers to candidacy – From high nomination fees to gender-based political violence, women struggle to secure party backing. Political parties play a crucial role in advancing gender equity in governance. What policies or strategies do you think are most urgent to improve women’s political participation?
