*SMALL VENUES OF THE WORLD - THE TURF CLUB, ST PAUL, USA*

Resurrecting this concept after quite a while away, I’m going to let you all into a little secret of mine. Whenever I’m away on holidays or business trips I always try to get out to see one cool local venue and to support whatever is going on in that city.

Without having done any real research and lacking local knowledge, it can be hard to find the ‘right’ kind of places at short notice, so to avoid disappointment my favourite trick is this - to simply google the city name and then add @kingbuffaloband (who are excellent of course, and tour HARD) and to see where they have played. If you get a hit from a previous KB appearance, odds are it’ll be a cool underground kind of place. Has worked for me scores of times! Try it!

Last night I managed to get away from business stuff for a few hours and got to check out @turfclubmn in St Paul, Minnesota (across the river from Minneapolis) which has apparently been running since the 1940s.

It had a good airy main room on street level, probably 250-300 cap with a clear straight view to the stage and a good long bar down the side with more facilities downstairs. The lady running the bar was excellent and recommended some great local beers, and I managed to catch an indie night featuring local band @megasoundband who were launching their self-titled debut album (a groovy, kooky band that kind of crossed White Stripes, B52s and more) and who had the place packed & bouncing, with slightly more wistful and grittier openers @agnes.uncaged .

The music was a bit lighter and poppier than my usual but I’m not gonna lie I really enjoyed it as a change up and the bands were excellent and vibrant. Even got to meet a couple of the lasses from Mega Sound afterwards to congratulate them on the album and their performance.

While I only got to see the more famous Minneapolis venue @firstavenue from a passing cab (and it’s epic list of ‘stars’ commemorating bands outside) you couldn’t help but feel that the Turf Club was the real grass roots venue for the area and there was clearly a lot of love and appreciation for it in the room last night.

Keep on rocking - St Paul ✌️🔥❤️
