⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 - What happens when society gives people new freedoms before they fully understand themselves inside them?

Agony uses the world of a 1970s women’s magazine to explore sexuality, identity, feminism and self-recognition through anonymous letters to an agony aunt column — and beneath the comedy is a genuinely fascinating idea about how people slowly discover who they are through language, reflection and connection.

Funny, charming and emotionally intelligent, this is a play that feels particularly relevant in an era where young people are exposed to more ideas, identities and expectations than ever before.

I found myself wanting the play to trust its own most powerful ideas even more deeply — particularly the fascinating correspondence between the two women at its centre — but the strength of the concept and the warmth of the performances make this a thoroughly engaging night of theatre.

Much like the women at its centre, Agony feels full of possibility, still discovering the full extent of what it could become.

A thoughtful, funny and genuinely interesting new work at KXT on Broadway.

On the other side is Bronnie, a confident 17-year-old who studies Tanya’s columns as a rulebook of womanhood. But does Tanya really have all the answers?

I first became fascinated with the Agony Aunt columns of 1970s magazines while studying the Women’s Liberation Movement for my honours thesis. While that thesis is now six feet under, the raw emotion of the letters stuck with me. In a world that deemed the inner lives of women irrelevant, these magazines offered a refuge. Clearly, this is a topic I can wax lyrical about, so writing this research into a cohesive play was difficult. What kept me in line was that the experiences described still remain relevant and the social change that feminist and LGBTQ+ activists fought for is still ongoing. I hope people come to AGONY and laugh, but also take a little bit of that with them.

What a thing to be sat front row at a fringe show, devouring a script and soaking in an incredible performance to being asked to direct its second outing. I immediately connected with AGONY. I left that theatre barely six months ago, begging for more stones to be unturned. With a stroke of luck, Mariika felt the same, and here we find ourselves at KXT, with an extremely exciting agenda - MORE. When directing, one can only dream of sinking into such incredible inner worlds - especially when stories like this mirror so much of yourself. Grab a straw and get ready to swallow it down, you’ll find out what real AGONY is if you miss this show.
