On September 19th, in commemoration of America’s 250th, JHC awarded the 2026 Jay Medals for Service to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed and Lincoln historian Harold Holzer at the National Historic Landmark Jay Estate in Rye, New York.
A highlight of the night was this message of congratulations and inspiration from Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club had a terrific time this afternoon at Historic Sandusky, as part of the national #wewantmorehistory events. We had a house tour, and learned how to do some archaeology. We hope to return soon to continue our finds!

Last week we welcomed Sarah Jones Weicksel, Executive Director of the American Historical Association, to DAR Museum for a fascinating talk on her new book, “A Nation Unraveled: Clothing, Culture, and Violence in the American Civil War Era.” Sarah walked us through how something as everyday as clothing became a powerful lens for understanding how Americans experienced, waged, and survived the Civil War.

Thank you to Sarah for such a rich presentation, and to everyone who joined us for the evening!

@nycschools just dropped a massive ✨FREE✨ curriculum on disability history.

It was a collaborative work among K-12 teachers, and can be used in classrooms of all ages!

It even features LGBTQ+ voices, women’s rights advocates, and civil rights advocates, as disability rights always intersect with other human rights issues.

This is the year we need to be bringing “Hidden Voices” into classrooms. 🙌

Back on campus and reminded every day of how crucial — and hard — it is to encourage students to try out new ideas, test their arguments, and get uncomfortable (which is very different from “unsafe”). The idea that “impact” of a comment always trumps the “intent” of the speaker has been in wide circulation in education for several years, and IMO, chills speech on all the thorny and important topics we should be grappling with in class and on campus.
