run/walk benefitting Woodrow Wilson HS LAFD magnet school program and the Los Angeles community of El Sereno.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Before it became @ascothillsparkla El Sereno once had a race that couldn't finish because the drivers couldn't see through the dust.

On January 20, 1924, the new Ascot Speedway opened near Valley Boulevard and Soto Street. It was a five-eighths-mile dirt oval with banked turns, built into a part of Los Angeles that was still changing around it.

Even getting people to the opening took planning. Railway improvements, including access tracks and loading platforms, helped delay the original opening date. This was a destination people would reach by rail as well as by car.

Then came the dust. Contemporary newspaper coverage describes a planned 40-lap race stopped after just 18 laps because visibility had become dangerous. The opening-day promise of speed ran straight into the limits of a dirt track.

The place kept changing. In 1928, the Glendale American Legion took over promotion and brought in AAA-sanctioned racing. Legion Ascot became part of a national racing circuit, with Sunday races in winter and Wednesday nights under the lights. Repeated applications of road oil hardened the original dirt surface.

Racing ended here in 1936. The photographs bring those twelve years back into view: a major sporting venue near streets neighbors still use, with its own arrivals, weekly schedule and changing technology.

Save this for a closer look at El Sereno's racing history.

📰 Check out our Monthly #AD52 District Digest ✨

Dear Neighbors: The session may be over, but our work in the community is just getting started.

Governor Newsom signed seven of my bills into law, marking an exciting milestone for the communities we serve. Now, we’re bringing that momentum home to #AD52—meeting with community leaders, showing up at local events, and listening to what our constituents want to see next.

What an incredible way to get fit and support the community. The Ascot Hills 5K is an awesome event that supports our LAUSD’s Wilson High School, Fire Prep Academy Magnet Program. This day marks the 12th year in a row that Mr. Troy Carbajal has worked so hard and diligently to not only support Wilson High School but to give back to his Alma Mater. As an alumni he is committed to supporting the youth and working with a program that helps to save lives. I have volunteered for two years and I am committed to doing whatever I can to help and support grass root efforts just like this. Don’t forget Wilson is one of the best in the top three (IYKYK). Can’t wait to do it again next year. Please come out and walk, jog, or run the course, it really is for a great cause. If you’d like to support or donate, they sure could use the help. And to volunteer, just ask, Troy can always use some great people to support this endeavor. #djemilianomiranda #thatsmydj #ascothills5k godj #ascothills vestaxmixer #5kdj vestaxdj pioneerusa pioneercdj pioneerdj shuremicrophones hpcomputer traktors4 traktordj mackiespeakers nativeinstruments

My favorite trail run, the Ascot Hills Challenge 5K! ⛰️🏃‍♀️

This was our Pacers group’s fourth year running it together. We love that this race supports the Wilson High School Fire and Police Magnet Cadet Program and Ascot Hills Park. 💛

And, of course, it’s our yearly tradition to come together and celebrate our dear friend Frances’s birthday. We love you, Frances! Another great run and another special year together. 🥳🥂💖

What an incredible day at the Ascot Hills 5K Run/Walk Challenge! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🔥

Our Wilson Firefighter & EMS Academy cadets showed up in every way , running, volunteering, supporting the community, and representing our program with pride. And a HUGE congratulations to our very own Pablo Diaz, who finished 2nd place overall! 🥈🔥 What an amazing accomplishment and such a proud moment for our academy!

One of the biggest highlights was having LAFD Chief Moore spend time with our cadets, sharing words of advice, his personal journey, and experiences that our students were able to truly listen to and absorb. Moments like these are exactly what make experiences outside of the classroom so meaningful. 🚒❤️

Our cadets also had the opportunity to connect with councilmembers, senators, community leaders, LAFD personnel, and members of the community we serve. More than anything, we had an amazing time together while building relationships, making memories, and representing Wilson proudly.

A huge thank you to Troy Carbajal for putting together such a great event and for being a continued supporter of our program. Your support and dedication to our cadets does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for the opportunities you continue to provide.

Such a proud day for Wilson Fire Academy. 🔥💙💛

First 5K officially in the books @ahc5k @ascothillsparkla 🥹🏅 I walked it, I finished it, and I’m so damn proud of myself. Thank you to everyone who encouraged me, checked on me, trained with me, cheered me on, and reminded me that I could do this. I felt all of that support today. ❤️ Will I do it again next year? I think so. And now I’ve got a time to beat. 😉 1:28… I’m coming for you. 😂 #reels #explore #smallbusiness #5k #fyp Thank you for being there @veasyg @cheffarah1 🥹🫶❤️
