Making books for my colleagues out of my collection of fun packaging * episode 1 *

I have been collecting packaging materials/objects to make books out of, and had a brilliant idea…to make books for my super cool, super wonderful colleagues! So, to get started I pulled out some of my favorite packaging, the Goodles mac & cheese boxes, obviously. These were extra fun because I could match the flavor to the person! Hehe! And of course I had to Riso print a grid pattern for the pages inside. These were all bound with a series of 3-hole sewn saddle stitches (pamphlet stitches). I was excited about how these turned out, and was even more excited to share them with my Creative Core team, which I was able to do a few days ago!

Thank you to @mmacleis @justinbaileydesign @ahmed_ozsever @andreeaalunei & @kelsey.blacklock for being the most lovely people to work with! The Creative Core team is the best!

Thank you to @allgoodles for having the cutest, most colorful packaging! And for having the most delicious mac & cheese ever!

Stay tuned for more books in this series!

In praise of @stove_works here are some photos from my time in Chattanooga last June…

I had such a rich experience in this residency program. I arrived planning to mostly edit and develop the triptych installation, but found myself largely immersed in the letterpress studio at @theopenpresscha, thanks to the patience and generosity of everyone there. i was surprised to find something in the process that clicked for me and many nights disappeared into the morning. They also have hands down my favorite woodshop to work in (raw plywood walls, level concrete floor, wall of 2 windowed garage doors).

Along the way I shared a work-in-progress section of Film B: by the time I see you in the morning , and saw remarkable work develop in neighboring studios, had cheap beer and burgers at Lo Main. Wandered on bike. Converged with folks in the kitchen and spontaneously had heady esoteric conversations that filled my soul.

This is a really special place for artists. The staff is exceptionally generous and available and the space / public programming was really conducive to focused work as well as connecting with other residents and the local artist community. Highly recommend checking them out.

Shout out to my fellow artists Alex Zak, Hannah @serious_moonlite @jordan__holm @ahmed_ozsever Jorge @_piramide_ @saracamis and Dean @tiramazzouz and thanks to @katesigridgreenwell for teaching me the ways of the letterpress ~~~

The next stop on our tour of “Continuum” brings us to a diverse group of pieces.

Betsy Stirratt’s “Newberry Springs” is a collage of archival pigments prints, layered upon each other with gouache, creating an abstraction of representational imagery.

“Use Your Words” draws elements from Greek antiquity, intimacy, and aggression, creating stirring conversations on masculinity through amorphous beings.

These inkjet prints by Ahmed Ozsever show the rich redness of the earth in correspondence with manmade objects. The earth, which appears arid, overshadows the decay evident in these structures.

Tim Mather’s mixed media work, “Are we home yet?” is reminiscent of brutalist architecture but instead takes on elements of play and organic form. Its neutral color scheme is broken up by the green ceramic frog that rests on its pedestal, alongside other unconventional objects.

“The end of the world” is a reclamation of inherited narratives. Using the visual language of children’s book illustrations, Andreea Alueni’s symbolic and emotionally charged works explore belief, mortality transformation and the human condition in moments of tension and change.

This series of portraiture paintings, “Present”, “Consensus”, and “As I Am”, by Ben Pines, conveys emotions and body language by focusing solely on the subject. Each piece offers a moment in time of human interaction and response.

This show will remain on display through March 7, 2026. Open hours are Tue-Sat, 4-6 PM.

Join us tomorrow (Thursday, January 23, 5:30-8:00 pm) for a reception for “Five Miles/Twenty-Five Years,” a solo exhibition by Ahmed Ozsever. The exhibition is now open and will run through Feb. 6, 2025. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

About the exhibition:

Aerial imagery often portrays landscapes as neutral, abstract forms--flattening rivers, silos and roadways into two-dimensional compositions shaped by colors, patterns and values. These visual records, archived in both physical and digital spaces, catalog land at specific moments in time. “Five Miles/Twenty-Five Years” juxtaposes this omniscient aerial perspective with human-scale imagery, creating a dialogue between history, intervention and memory.

Ozsever’s photographic and sculptural works engage archival imagery of central Illinois landscapes, focusing on areas reshaped by coal mining and transportation infrastructure. Through this layered visual exploration, the exhibition reflects on the passage of time as evidenced in land, domestic spaces and industrial infrastructure. By connecting geologic time, cycles of capital and everyday human experience, Ozsever visualizes the significant impact of human presence on the environment.

This project is the latest in Ozsever’s works about land, human intervention upon it and how the intersection of land and the human-made can shape our conceptions of both the past and present. It seeks to visualize the symptomatic evidence of the passage of time in land, infrastructure and domestic spaces. These spaces bind together the incomprehensible deep time (or geologic time), to that of capital, and the cycles of consumption and occupancy that comprise and punctuate our day-to-day existence.

@ahmed_ozsever This image features an overall installation view of the exhibition “Five Miles/Twenty-Five Years” by Ahmed Ozsever. Framed blue, white, and black prints hang on the wall and sculptural wooden forms fill the space.
