In August, we headed up to Brisbane for the AHRI National Convention & Exhibition 2026 - three inspiring days of learning, connection and fresh ideas. ✨

It was a pleasure to meet and connect with HR leaders from across Australia, hear different perspectives, and explore the latest trends and conversations shaping the HR sector.

We’re heading home with plenty of new insights, great connections and lots to think about! 💡🤝

Playing the 'good and bad dinner guest' at last weeks @ahri.au Australian Human Resource Institute National Conference.

The topic: The Hidden Human Costs of AI at Work.

My notes:
- the Big Tech ideas of inevitability is the most successful product they have sold so far. 🙄

- Tony Fry's 'defuturing' = the idea that 'the future' is narrowing - a foreclosure of possibilities (which aint a good thing for civilisation, according to history)

- The rise of 'asymptomatic' harm around Ai + digital tech = harm that you can't see, doesn't show up in traditional metrics + we might be fooled into thinking that things are going well. (The dashboards tell us the Ai implementation is succeeding - uptake, volume, speed).

- But 'asymptomatic harm' is starting to show up in three key areas 1) capability, 2) power, 3) relationships.

- Asymptomatic harms arrive quietly. Things like 'cognitive offloading' (increasing deference to machine thinking = 'intuition rust' and 'skill atrophy').

- Decline in decision quality, judgement and discernment, individually and at an aggregate level.

- The drift to 'algorithmic management' - what I call 'the black box boss'. Management decisions increasingly made by machines = more opaque and harder to question.

- The Stanford Study across 4million job applications and 156 big employers found that AI screening tools create an "algorithmic monoculture" leading to "systemic rejection" (Can anyone even find a job these days???)

- The deference to machines instead of colleagues. One study found that 47% of younger workers preferred to go to Ai chatbot vs manager.

- Leaning on the chatbot = showing up as more friction and formalised complaints for HR (turns out, human colleagues are good modulators of behaviour, machines can escalate + affirm).

And, of course, lots of real-life stories to show how these changes are showing up 'in here and how'.

Today I asked a bursting ballroom full of HR leaders one question:

“In a world of constant disruption and change, do your people trust you enough to let you lead them through it?”

The silence that followed spoke volumes.

Today it was an absolute privilege to deliver my Trust Revolution deep dive at the AHRI National Conference & Exhibition in Brisbane.

For 110 minutes we had honest conversations about what so many people are feeling but few are saying out loud.

That trust has become one of the greatest leadership challenges of our time.

In a world of disruption, uncertainty, burnout, AI, polarisation and constant change, people aren’t just looking for better leaders. They’re looking for leaders they can trust.

What struck me most wasn’t the discussion itself. It was the courage in the room.

Leaders who were prepared to be vulnerable.

To acknowledge where trust has been broken.

To share their own challenges.

To listen deeply to one another.

Because rebuilding trust doesn’t begin with another policy, strategy or framework.

It begins with a conversation.

A choice.

An act of courage.

Thank you to every person who showed up with openness, honesty and a willingness to challenge themselves. Thank you to the incredible AHRI team for creating such an outstanding conference and for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation.

If there was one message I hope everyone took away today, it’s this:

Trust isn’t built in the big moments. It’s built in the thousands of small moments when our words, actions and values consistently align.

The Trust Revolution has already begun.

The only question is:

Will we choose to lead it?

What a day to be launching. Yesterday, on the very day The Institute of EI went live, we were proud to be part of the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) VIC HR Conference 2026 in Melbourne — connecting with the HR and people professionals doing this work every day.

There couldn't have been a better room to be in on day one. 💙

Mel and Mark recently attended the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) HR Conference in Sydney, joining HR professionals from across the state.

It was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, build new connections, and be part of the conversation around developing emotional intelligence competencies in the workplace.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand.
