Hard to explain what making LOOP has meant to me. It’s a project that doesn’t make sense on paper: 26 pages of script, inevitably 26+ minutes of runtime, a costly genre, a short film without the clearest of paths forward.

That not making sense...might be one of my favorite things about it.

About 18 months ago, I was trying to put together my second feature documentary. A verbal commitment for financing fell through, and the project slowly dissolved. The process of marketing, promoting, and selling The 50 taught me that building a career often feels anchored in anticipating the needs of the market...reverse engineering the artist. That second feature doc came from a process of reverse-engineering. Over a year later, I feel like I was being told something.

I’m not sure if this is relatable to other artists, but there are times when I’ve felt the external world’s thumb press down on every micro decision I make, forcing me to become a master of justifying a creative existence that feels, vapid. I don’t like that feeling. It wasn't like the external world was asking anything from me but that pressing through comparison, envy, and even admiration left its mark and still does.

So back to LOOP. No doubt, it was conceived in some ways under that thumb. But more than anything, it’s been created as an act of creative expansion. A desperate desire to grow at the cost of not making sense.

It’s a piece of art saying something about the technofeudalism we’re spiraling toward and the loss of self that comes with it. It comes from a deep desire to create something beautiful with a group of wildly talented, full-hearted people who want to be challenged, too.

Making LOOP has meant everything.

I guess it wasn’t too hard to explain.

Thank you to every single person who has been part of this journey: the team, the donors, friends with encouraging words, and friends with constructive feedback. I'm beyond grateful for all of you.
