Much love to our brilliant cohort of 10 participants of the first ever @qyzqaras Curatorial Workshop! 🤍

It was such a pleasure to learn about everyone’s practices and the very different contexts we work within, and to share open conversations around politics, ethics, negotiation, agitation and activism. As well as topics around communication, mediation and audience development.

We loved hearing the ideas that emerged through the workshop and seeing them come together in the final pitches.

Thank you for the generous exchanges, conversations and laughter. We can’t wait to see where your practices take you next, and hope to our paths cross again in future - whether in Central Asia, Scotland, Germany or beyond.

This year’s participants were:
Ainel Saduova
Sofiya Pak
Madina Oraz
Zhannat Alshanova
Suad Gara Maleki
Aydan Turumbekova
Milana Byryshaeva
Assiya Issemberdiyeva
Arukhan Madiyeva

Our time in Almaty is flying, but we’re still having an amazing time hanging out with the coolest festival team, workshop group and audience ever @Qyzqaras!

On the third day of our Curatorial Workshop we talked about politics and ethics, one of our favourite topics. Sitting in a circle with our cohort from across Central Asia, we had such an open conversation, learning about the very different contexts we work within, as well as their experiences of negotiation, agitation and activism!

And we loved the accidental yellow-and-black dress code! 💛🖤

From the festival programme, we saw @vladlena_sandu’s Memory, a striking, urgent and deeply moving portrait of generational trauma, built from fragmented recollections of the filmmaker’s childhood.

And we also watched Kurak by @erkeerkin and Emil Atageldijev, which was refused a censor certificate in its home country Kyrgyzstan (without which a public screening in Kyrgyzstan is not legally possible) earlier this year, forcing it to withdraw from the Bishkek International Film Festival, and denying it a home premiere.

Another day of films, conversations and so much to think about; we can’t believe our time at the festival is almost at an end 😭
