Dr. Ali Meders - Knight is a Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico member and the Executive Director of California Open Lands.

She explains the history of the dam systems and cause of wildfires due to removal of Native plants for timber and agricultural use. This has destroyed our natural aquifers. Large reservoirs above ground are not viable for long term water use. EPA is not identifying true causes of wildfires on the ground where fuels are created in drought conditions, yet, depend on large infrastructure and excessive amounts of funds to pay for fire suppression.

The Bay Delta Plan and Sites Reservoir are not viable solutions to mitigate water shortages. Climate change is a result of diversions and reservoirs damaging our natural water systems. Join us as we speak 🗣️ up to protect our communities and our natural water systems.

I am making a Video project about New York history. Through my research, I found out New York was part of the Lenape ancestral homeland. Then I met @shattam55 on Indigenous Peoples Parade, the chairman of @aichnyc Lucky me, I was thrilled to learn and the man was willing to talk, we had a very nice interview after the parade. I learned so many things about indigenous history, culture and spirit that I can never find on the internet.
Thank you, @shattam55 , for sharing your time and knowledge with me. I’m excited to share more of our conversation soon.

WATER & SOIL — More Than a Tasting Experience

Sometimes I look back at these pictures and can’t believe how far this journey has taken me. Not once, but twice, I found myself in New York City sharing Indigenous knowledge, building relationships, and having conversations about the future of our Mother Earth.

And honestly, that little Rez girl inside me is pretty proud. ❤️

On May 16, Seven Generations United Association hosted WATER & SOIL alongside James Beard Award-winning Chef Sherry Pocknett, with the generous support of the American Indian Community House, which provided our space.

Together, we created an intimate spring tasting experience rooted in Indigenous foodways, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and our responsibilities to the land and water.

We talked about invasive species, land stewardship, food sovereignty, and why these conversations matter now more than ever.

And we shared beautiful seasonal foods, including wild violet syrup that transformed colors right before our guests’ eyes!

But behind these beautiful moments is something people don’t always see.

Building Indigenous-led educational programs takes time, travel, resources, and a tremendous amount of community support. Much of this work is still being built through personal sacrifice, generosity, and people who believe in the mission.

Our goal is to build something sustainable so we can continue sharing knowledge, creating educational opportunities, and caring for the land for generations to come.

To everyone who has opened a door, shared a resource, attended an event, or believed in this vision — thank you.

We’re building something bigger than ourselves. I also had the opportunity to attend the Indigenous Food Policy Summit in NYC, continuing conversations about why Traditional Knowledge belongs at the heart of food sovereignty. ✊🏽

The invisible supporting the visible better know where I stand. That this day is, like yesterday, and as tomorrow, in accordance with nature. That my impulses would not become my maker. I bleed, and become a woman. Nature initiates me. Begotten, a son eats the apple and realizes he initiates his own life. Women watch closely as men eat of another animal’s flesh with no reverence, no offering, no ritual. Women watch closely. We watch closely. We talk amongst ourselves as gods, and messengers of god are disappeared on a drunk night. I sing the men a revivification song. Will awakening.
