Highlights from @babarluck786’s World Citizen Folk Band set last month at Give ‘Em The Boot 🖤🩷

To have this iconic trio play the first @routes_radicals all-dayer meant so much in so many ways.

Firstly because Babar played the last DIY punk gig I put on back in 2005. The gig was in Bournemouth and he headlined the show, performing alongside the likes of FireAppleRed and Howard’s Alias (I miss both bands!). I actually hired a guy to film the gig… he never gave me what he filmed… but I hope the footage exists somewhere and is unearthed one day!

And of course it goes without saying, but I am a big fan of King Prawn and Suicide Bid, much like many of you in attendance on the day!

Having Babar return to one of my shows 20 years later was such an honour. So many people were buzzing to see him and kept coming up to me throughout the day to tell me how excited they were for the set.

A wonderfully powerful and impassioned performance had us mesmerised from start to finish.

So many of us in the scene have been inspired by Babar over the years, which is why he played the slot I ended up calling the ‘Legend Slot’ (just like Glastonbury!).

More than anything, it felt like a fitting celebration of someone who has given so much to the scene. Having him play both my last DIY punk gig and my first all-dayer, felt beautifully full circle.

Some things just feel meant to be, and this was definitely one of them 🙏

Lastly special thanks to @photoswotitook for capturing this beautiful set - I feel the images really encapsulate the emotions on the day ❤️

Some songs just stay with you from the moment you hear them. “Wings” by the incredible @birdyinstagram has been one of those songs for me & Miss Joelle. I wish I could get the chance to sing it at every gig but it has to be the right environment to give it the moment it deserves that will hopefully then stay with the audience you are performing to. That’s what every singer hopes for tbh, to move their audience in the same the music has moved you as the singer. Thank you as well to the phenomenal @kevinsimm for the vocal riffing inspiration! Let me know if the comments what song has always stayed with you from that very first time you heard it!

More stunning scenes from last month’s @routes_radicals presents Give ‘Em The Boot at @signaturebrewe8, London’s newest inclusive and accessible punk rock cabaret party 🩷🖤

Big up @photoswotitook for capturing the day in all its glory 😘

Been looking back on these gorgeous pics, full of ridiculously talented performers and an amazing, ever-growing community who have come to the last two events, and I feel so grateful for all the love, support and enthusiasm shown 🙏

This week, @blacklivesinmusic published the REMEL Report (Race Equality in Music Event Licensing).

The report reveals evidence from across the industry that Black and South Asian-led events face disproportionately high levels of scrutiny, restrictions and cancellations compared to other events.

These barriers also come at a significant cost to the economy, with the report estimating that between £127 million and £141 million in live music spending is lost each year.

It literally makes financial sense to put on a show like this, but I definitely feel those challenges myself. I stopped putting on events for a long time because of discrimination. Things haven’t changed but it felt like a necessity to start again!

It generally feels hard trying to exist right now as a dark-skinned, queer, neurodivergent woman. But it’s all I know, and if anything, it just spurs me on. Having a place where like-minded people can come together has been a powerful thing.

While I like to be in the background I’m so fortunate to have my fabulous hosts @londonsmarrieddragduo front of house, all these inspiring artists to showcase and an engaging crowd who bring their full selves to the show.

For me, it’s an honour to support people to thrive 🙏

So many people have told me, on and off stage, that they’ve never had their needs met at a gig before and what a difference that’s made. Hearing that is so affirming.

I just hope I can keep this going for as long as possible because spaces like this feel like unicorns.

They matter so much, especially when you hear about reports like that and see the growing popularity of far-right politics.

Long live queer, melanated, disabled, working-class and neurodivergent joy 🩷🖤
