Did you know?
Gray whale populations are sadly declining due to climate change and habitat loss 📉
However, these amazing creatures continue to inspire us with their beauty and grace 👑
Let’s keep appreciating and learning from them, and do what we can to protect them! 🌊🐋🌎

Yesterday, I joined with esteemed leaders from around the world who came together at the annual Colloquium on Global Diversity, organized by the @globalsummitofwomen and hosted by the global law firm of @paulhastingslaw in Washington, DC. Diversity executives, C-suite leaders, and inclusion advocates from dozens of countries came together to discuss the challenges and solutions to close the disparity gap, leveraging domestic and international best practices.

At the conclusion of the Colloquium on Global Diversity, we attended an internationally-festive banquet celebrating 35 years of the Global Summit of Women. A big congratulations to my good friend and fearless leader Irene Natividad, President of the Global Summit of Women for a hugely successful Global Colloquium gathering as well as 35 years of inspiring dedicated leadership advocating for corporate inclusion and board diversity for women and underrepresented communities around the world.

As we begin Women’s History Month, it’s a reminder that more must be done to advance the inclusion of women at the highest levels of Corporate America, especially women of color who continue to be severely underrepresented in senior, executive, and board roles.

One of my favorite interactions with gray whales is when the moms start to introduce humans to their young ones! 🍼
.
Early in the season, when the calves are still newborns, moms usually keep their distance from the boats, or go to areas of the lagoon without whale watching activities.
As weeks go by (usually around March), and the calves gain more confidence, experience and curiosity, moms begin teaching them on how to approach the boats.
On this video, a mom and her calf (nicknamed “Yay Yay” by our youngest guest) approached the boat slowly.
Yay Yay curiously approached us for a couple of interactions, and then kept some distance while observing us. Mom stayed under the boat, avoiding interaction herself, as if she was letting her calf take center stage, all while keeping a watchful eye on this “playdate” with us, silly humans, screaming with joy every time Yay Yay peeked above the surface. 😂
Having the privilege to witness these moments, where nature takes the lead and trust is built between species, is both breathtaking and honoring!!

These encounters happen in the lagoons of Baja, Mexico. It is a Natural Protected Area and is legal under law.
Whales choose to approach the boats, and engines are in neutral.
It is entirely the whales choice to interact with humans.
There is no study up to date that proves humans transmit disease to gray whales or viceversa.
Gray whales and barnacles have a host-specific relationship (commensalism), in which
the barnacles benefit from the whales by
being attached and transported by them,
while the whales are neither benefited nor
harmed. The barnacles DO NOT feed from the
whales, they feed from microorganisms
suspended in the water.

What a truly special interaction 🥹😍
It’s usually later in the season when one can have this unique interactions with moms and calves. Earlier in the season, even though moms had already given birth, calves put on a great show, but rarely approach a boat. It’s until later in the season that moms start teaching and letting their calves approach the boats on their own, or with them by their side. This was most likely one of the first interactions of this playful and beautiful baby with whale watching boats!
You can notice the shyness of the calf at first, slowly approaching the boat, with part of the head out of the water, as if trying to get a better look of us or trying to figure us out 😂😍. Mom comes up to surface to breathe near the boat (but not within contact distance) and hangs there for a moment, as if to reassure her baby that they are safe.
After a moment, the calf gains more confidence and trust and first contacts are made!! 🙌🏼😁 And mom slowly hangs back, as if letting her baby play a while with the little silly humans 😂.
In what looks like a curious and playful way, the calf keeps approaching for more interactions, collecting love from almost everyone on board!! Even getting a beautiful kiss from @aidasabo!! 😍
After about a minute of interactions (that feels like a lifelong love story), the baby hangs back and keeps enjoying splashes from a distance.
Thank you mom for trusting us to play with your baby! ♥️🐋

The 2024 Colloquium on Global Diversity was a massive success! As we enter this realm of attacks on DEI initiatives, it was heart warming to see all of us come together to discuss best practices and creating a level playing field for women. From discussing inter-generational voices in the workplace to the SCOTUS Affirmative Action decision and its effect on DEI, we truly learned a lot from each other! Thank you to all of our speakers and participants.
