Today is my birthday. I was lucky to spend Saturday with a day trip with friends up to Rhinebeck, where I got to do all of my favorite things and eat at some of my favorite places in the world. I wish it could have been a longer trip. I need a vacation. It’s been a year where I’ve felt at many points I’d lived lifetimes in a week. But the important part of that is I got to live those lifetimes and get to live this life with people I love tremendously and who are there for me when I break a knee or have my heart broken.

Special shout to my sister and brother in law who put me up for months when I couldn’t walk upstairs (thanks, knee surgery), who made me some of my best little friends on the planet (2/3rds of whom are also 🦀♋️), and this crazy amazing spaghetti vongole for my birthday dinner. They are the best.

Lastly, I took a moment before my birthday martini to give a mental and cosmic clink of a cold glass to MDL. I miss her the most on our birthdays, but carry her with me always. 🍸🍸

I do try to keep things equal parts gin and wry on social media, but I don’t think it’s a secret that I got a little beat up the last few months. Life is hard and the world is on fire and even my natural ebullience started to deflate. So I extended my week-long trip to NYC into three, and I ran around boroughs with old friends and made new ones. I saw my first Broadway shows since 2020, I got to watch TV and eat Mexican food on the couches of people who’ve known me since I was 17, I went on dates, I stayed up late, I went to bed early, I explained “Chilao” 29x, I drank 212 variations of martinis, and made friends with 7 bartenders—and Pasta Lovers was the drumbeat underneath it all. I love my LA life, but every now and then I think I need to remind myself that I’m really fucking cool on a bicoastal level.

Grief is surreal enough. Being away from home when you’re grieving adds a strange layer of awareness to it, as though you are somehow outside of your own skin.

If I had to be anywhere on earth while going through a period of intense grief, it was here. I remain so grateful that I had this soft place to land. Much love to @aileenmeghan, @abbyarmada.jpg, and @krizanovich who kept me standing.

The show that changed my life. In July of 2013 @aileenmeghan took me to a new venue I didn’t even know existed in a basement on 54th Street to see my favorite Broadway actor, @norbert_leo_butz. The show was called “Girls, Girls, Girls” and it confirmed for me why Norbert is our most interesting, intellectually curious, and thoughtful performer – not to mention insanely talented. He delivered an epic show that was a blend of radical feminism, Greek mythology, Jungian psychology, and extraordinary song choices—all delivered with perfect vocals and dazzling delivery. The venue was @54below and three years later, I would decide to work there and spend the next 8 ½ years in the best job with the best people, seeing well over a thousand shows and delightfully meeting hundreds of amazing performers who all shone in their own way. But none as brightly as Norbert, who today remains my favorite performer, and this show also remains my favorite cabaret show of all time. (And it doesn’t even contain any show tunes!) I never thought I would see it again but somehow, Norbert has decided to give the fans what they want and has brought it back one more time. Thanks @jenashtep for making this happen! I feel like I manifested it.

If you know me, you know that I have spent the last 12 years talking about this show to anyone who would listen. And now is your chance to go! I’ll be there Sunday and Tuesday so say hi if you see me.
