2026 so far. Pirate-temps, FBI-fever dreams, communal survival, windswept brawlers, dead dads, rat-rules and round-tuits, snakes and stones, puppeteers and scrambled eggs, the best eastern-westerns, so many doorways, even more worms, antifreeze salvation, language without bees, major arcanas, wild hunger, listening to Aimee Bender read Rose 💛, radical light, beaver-believers, deep deep time. 💙 So lucky to be alive with these books.

Also, why’s everybody so mad about the new #thestrokes record, they’ve been around a quarter century. People can change 😂

"Legacy" by Aimee Bender was first published my cream city review in Fall 1996, and reprinted 30 years later in our 50th anthology. We love how Bender's unsettling stage moves through emotion, time, with perfectly rendered word choices ("chin brave," "lurch of his hunch") and slippery falls into interiority.

Aimee Bender is our 2026 prose judge for our Summer Contest (open until 08/01!).

A Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender is one of the most unusual books I've read.
Imagine discovering that every meal carries the emotions of the person who made it. What starts as a strange gift slowly becomes a burden, revealing loneliness, love, and secrets hidden beneath everyday life.
A quiet, strange, and thought-provoking read for anyone who enjoys magical realism and character-driven stories.
⭐ Rating: 4/5

Inspired by @heatherbelladams who has been posting favorite story collections for short story month. These are some of my favorites in the As-Bs. Some old ones like Achebe and the Barthelme brothers. Some newer ones like @king_nk @kalimaja @ramonaausubel @aimeeaimee1966 & @vblakeslee And an all time fav in @shermanalexie.official

What is your favorite collection of stories? I’ll try to post more before the month is over.

I thought I might rank them? But that would have been too hard and exhausting. 🤣🤣

Le amate come me?

We are thrilled to announce that Fairy Tale Review contributor Aimee Bender's short story “The Tailor and the King," which was published in The Arsenic Issue (Volume 20, 2025) has been selected to appear in Best American Short Stories 2026 edited by Viet Thanh Nguyen and BASS series editor @nicole.a.lamy !

From the Harper Collins website: "The Best American series, launched in 1915, is the premier annual showcase for the country’s finest short fiction and nonfiction, and it is the most respected—and most popular—of its kind. Viet Thanh Nguyen—Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author of The Sympathizer—selected twenty stories out of thousands that represent the best examples of the form published this year."

We are so proud to be represented in Best American Short Stories 2026, and this is our second volume in a row (!) to have such a rare honor: "The Magic Bangle" by @shastriav which was published in Fairy Tale Review (The Rainbow Issue, 2023), guest edited by Benjamin Schaefer, appeared in Best American Short Stories 2024 edited by Lauren Groff. Go fairy tales!

Ja som túto knihu čítala prvýkrát keď vyšla (r. 2013) a teraz som si ju užila ešte viac.

Okrem neštandardného zážitku magického realizmu ponúka príbeh tiež realitu rodinného života a medziľudských vzťahov, zaujímavú psychológiu postáv a prekvapivo realistický záver.

Once a month, on the second Monday of the month, we transform our space into a bistro, separating our bindery tables and adding place settings with menus and wine glasses.

Eat Their Words is one of our more popular programs, often selling out.

Last night, we ate a gorgeous four course dinner that was inspired by The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, by Aimee Bender (we all LOVED the French onion soup in particular!)—-and! We were delighted that Ms Bender zoomed in from California for the beginning of our evening. While we only had about 15 minutes with her, it was deeply satisfying and inspiring to talk briefly with her about the book, and those 15 minutes made the rest of the conversation go even deeper that we had anticipated.

THANK YOU to Chef Toni, whose talent for transforming what we’ve read into such delicious meals is unparalleled.
