How does a major land grab happen in broad daylight?

In Pará, Brazil, it took just 24 minutes for state lawmakers to unanimously pass a law creating a new state reserve that overlapped entirely with the Ituna/Itatá Indigenous Territory, home to an uncontacted group of people. Promoted by politicians as a win for struggling small farmers, a new Mongabay investigation reveals a very different underlying reality.

Data analysis by Mongabay and Instituto Direito e Análise de Dados Socioambientais shows that 97% of the illegal land registries inside the territory actually belong to medium and large commercial properties, while dozens of registrants already own farms elsewhere.

Vulnerable families are being used as pawns or invasion front-runners by powerful businesspeople and politicians to establish a foothold on the land. Within weeks of the law's passage, nearly two hundred people invaded the reserve, smashing through security gates, while forest fires spiked across the area. Human rights advocates warn that using manufactured legal loopholes to open protected forests puts the uncontacted Igarapé Ipiaçava people at immediate risk of destruction.

I met Rubi a few months ago. The sea swallowed her home during a fierce northern storm.

She’s one of over 70 families forced to leave El Bosque, a coastal community in Mexico that’s been slowly disappearing since 2019 due to rising sea levels. It’s now considered the first town in Mexico erased by the climate crisis.

Rubi and her family were relocated by the government to a new settlement 12 km inland. The new house is nice, she has filled it with plants and they’re grateful—but it doesn’t feel like home yet.

They’ve lost their place by the sea. Their way of life. Their roots.

Some in the community still return to El Bosque to fish. But for Rubi, moving meant starting over in every sense—including finding a job in the city to support her new life.

I had the privilege of spending a few days with her and her family, helping with field production for a story by @samanthaleewq —who kindly invited me along since I was already nearby.

You can now watch the full piece on @mongabay YouTube channel.

Along with humanitarian and other forms of aid, the U.S. government is one of the world’s biggest funders of nature conservation projects.

In 2023 alone, USAID provided $375.4 million to such projects across the world.

U.S. funding has been spent on a wide range of conservation activities, such as support for wildlife rangers, community conservancies, and forest mapping.

Sources told Mongabay that the shuttering of USAID and abrupt aid pause has left conservation groups worldwide in a state of uncertainty, with some scaling back their activities and planning to lay off staff.

Without consistent funding, ongoing projects face the threat of scaling back or shutting down entirely, potentially impacting, in the long-term, both the environment and the communities that rely on these initiatives for their livelihoods.

According to Mongabay’s research, the funding freeze has affected the operations of many nature-based projects worldwide, particularly in biodiversity hotspots and some of the world’s poorest regions.

A women-led reforestation effort has planted millions of mangrove trees with a high survival rate across swamps in Nigeria’s oil-rich and severely degraded Niger Delta.

For decades, the Ogoni people of the delta’s Ogoniland region have faced the impacts of numerous oil spills, logging, and the spread of invasive nipa palms that destroyed thousands of mangroves they rely on for their livelihoods.

As a result of the reforestation initiative’s reported successes so far, the government has hired some Ogoni women to share their technical knowledge and plant mangroves for its rehabilitation project of contaminated sites (Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project — HYPREP).

While independent studies on the impacts of this reforestation effort are yet to be published, sources say anecdotal evidence suggests that fish stocks are beginning to bounce back and some conservationists say they’re hopeful.

The Niger Delta hosts Africa’s biggest mangrove forest ecosystem and is also home to some of the continent’s largest oil and gas reserves. This vast wetland is home to a rich diversity of marine life, which in turn are important to many local communities in Ogoniland.

While oil beneath Nigeria’s ground dominates the country’s foreign exchange earnings, it’s the wetlands aboveground in the Niger Delta that are key to communities’ local economy.
