@ajamustudios is a Brixton-based photographer whose practice has, since the 1980s, explored Black queer life in the UK. @quillemons is a Gen Z photographer based between New York and Los Angeles, whose work similarly explores themes of Black masculinity, intimacy and desire.⁠ ⁠ Ajamu first encountered Quil’s work at his first exhibition, Glitterboy, held in Toronto in 2018. Quil discovered Ajamu’s work a few years later while researching his new publication, Quiladelphia. He wanted “to see everything in the queer canon” and figure out what he could say through his own work that felt new.⁠ ⁠ Ahead of the publication of Quiladelphia – which traces the first ten years of Lemons’ practice – the two photographers speak with @alayoakinkugbe to discuss their respective upbringings in the UK and the US, the Black queer archive and photographing the broad spectrum of Black masculinity. From NYC to London! Last week, we crossed the pond to hold a private event to build support for the Museum. Generously hosted by artist and organizer Kevin Kane (@kevin.kane.art), we were joined by some of London’s queer artists, curators, and arts workers. Who gets remembered - and who gets left out of the record??? This post grew out of a conversation we started at BLT CLUB with @fourtunehouse in Chicago this September, bringing artists and cultural workers together to think about art, memory, archives, and the ways Black life gets preserved. Black artists have long documented what institutions overlooked, misrepresented, or failed to preserve. Ajamu X, Camille Billops, Leslie Hewitt, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Jeannette Ehlers, and Deborah Jack each offer a different way into that work - through desire, family photographs, cultural history, colonial archives, landscape, water, and more. They’re also all part of Black Lunch Table’s Wiki Task List, our growing list of Black visual artists whose presence on Wikipedia needs to be created, expanded, or strengthened. Because discovering an artist is only the beginning. Documentation is how the conversation continues. Who would you add to this conversation?
