Today, I figured that Whiteness 101 may be helpful. Having clear language to describe lived experiences is necessary for building, not semantic hijinks. I want to encourage folks to join us next month on Patreon as we commit to a deep dive on studying Whiteness and it’s impacts. Link to signup in the bio.

I’ve rarely talked about the “re-branding” of this particular IG page. It occurred in May of 2021. In short, when this page was called Hug Your White Friends (lol) a non-melaninated person attacked a POC citing I gave yt people hugs.

It’s a no from me dawg…. Le sigh

It wasn’t hard to decide on a new name for the platform. After all, I’d been studying, teaching, and writing about Whiteness for a minute. I also made the personal commitment to start divesting in 2016. I’d made both private and public declarations of that commitment every since.
In 2020, I co-authored a paper with @ashleynoelmack a dear friend entitled: Act Right White: Displacing Meritocracy and Recentering Intimacy calling for a radical reimagining of intimacy absent of Whiteness. In 2021, shortly after the US Capitol Insurrection, I joined my friend @iamjenkinney on the first episode of the @storypowerpodcast and declared to yt people, “[...] you're going to have to divest from Whiteness.”

On this journey, I’ve learned a lot of things. Things that I try to reflect on and embody. Concepts and strategies I try to support others in incorporating.

Black ✊🏽✊🏿✊🏾. Queer 🌈. Rising ✨.

Today, we're highlighting writer, director, producer of @poseonfx and Trans rights activist @janetmock. In 2018, Mock became the first Black, transgender and trans woman of color to write and direct an episode of television.

All month, The Takeaway presents #BlackQueerRising, a special project series highlighting Black Queer people's impact on American culture and society. Throughout the series, we interview changemakers who are making impact in their industries, in their lives, and in our world.
