In May 2010 (swipe for throwback pics!) I played my first ever NAGVA Championships in Portland, OR. I got to meet so many incredible people, many of whom I still call friends and chosen family.
•
I also got to witness an all women’s team battle it out in the Men’s A division because there was no Women’s division. This was my first exposure to witnessing trans athlete greatness, with legends like Tia Thompson and NAGVA HoF inductee Denise Daily leading the Molten Hawaii team.
•
Little did I know that 15 years later Portland would again host Championships, and this time we would be hosting a women’s division, that is unequivocally inclusive of trans women. Not only this, but I would be ending my tenure as the first openly trans woman to serve on the board, and close out the tournament by having the honor of announcing the women’s division awards.
•
I actually specifically asked the Board if I could do this, as I remembered just how powerful and inspiring those women were to me 15 years ago, and how I could honor the path they paved for me by speaking up for our community.
•
I don’t have any video of my short speech, but I will forever remember the boisterous and emphatic response the banquet attendees had when I spoke on the importance of protecting trans rights, and that NAGVA would always be a safe place for our most oppressed community members. I was so overwhelmed I had to take a moment to myself as soon as I left the stage and let the tears flow as I felt the weight of what is going on in the world and the very real fight for trans lives we are up against.
•
It has been an absolute HONOR to serve NAGVA as a board member and to carry on the legacy of the trans people who have come before me. And while it is bittersweet to no longer be serving in an official capacity, I will forever and always represent NAGVA with pride and joy.
•
NAGVA has shaped me into the woman I am today, and I would not be here if not for the community that NAGVA has given me. I never for one second take for granted that I get to participate in such an amazing community that is always growing, evolving, and giving hope to thousands of queer athletes.
