Since the 1980s, these lands have suffered from drainage during wartime, destroying 90% of their natural ecosystem. After 2003, the marshes were partially revived through local efforts and international support. But in 2025, the threat returns. Excavators operate near the Majnoon oil field, accelerating the drying of the marshes. Water buffalo flee, migratory birds vanish, and marshland communities face the risk of displacement. These marshes are not a land to exploit—they are a living legacy. What is drained today may never return.
