Knotting with Ako Gabbeh x Arts & Crafts Village - Japanese Craftswomen Knotting Life and Art In Person / Exhibition / Knotting On view: September 9 – October 1, 2026 (Mondays closed) Closing Reception: October 1, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Loop of the Loom 197 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201 At the heart of Japanese craftsmanship lies a long tradition in which nameless makers have quietly infused everyday objects with beauty. Loop of the Loom is proud to present an exhibition of hand-knotted works by members of Ako Gabbeh, a collective of weavers who carry this tradition forward, transforming the humble chair rug into a canvas for storytelling. For this exhibition, we welcome members of Ako Gabbeh from Japan, who will showcase more than 15 works. The exhibition also features the "Mountain" series by Noriko Yamanaka (Arts & Crafts Village), who will serve as a workshop instructor, as well as highly skilled Dantsu (traditional Japanese rug) by Rie Sakagami. Though still little known in the US, hand-knotting is a living art form that bridges everyday life and art—and with this month-long exhibition, we bring it to new audiences. @akogabbeh @acv.okayama @loopoftheloom

Sharing a glimpse into my two-week journey through Japan. 🇯🇵✨ My textile explorations led me to Kurashiki, where I visited the historic Hashimaya—a former kimono merchant’s residence—for an exhibition of Ako Dantsu by Ako Gabbeh. To be honest, this was a world I didn’t know much about until a friend introduced me to its dedicated weavers. What is Dantsu & Gabbeh? Dantsu is a unique Japanese hand-woven rug. While influenced by Persian and Chinese techniques, it evolved into something uniquely Japanese—woven with cotton threads dyed in indigo and other natural plant-based colors. Since the Meiji era, these luxurious rugs have been cherished by the Imperial Family and the elite, adorning tea houses and grand estates. What fascinated me most was “Ako Gabbeh”—a modern evolution of this craft. By using the same traditional techniques but these weavers create beautiful “chair rugs” design, dyeing and weave. They fit perfectly on contemporary furniture, like Eames chairs, bringing a touch of Japanese soul into modern homes. We are thrilled to announce that Loop of the Loom will be featuring Ako Gabbeh at this year’s New York Textile Month! Stay tuned as we bring the intricate beauty and soft texture of this Japanese craft to our studio. #AkoDantsu #japanesetextiles #handwoven #indigo #moderncraft
