THE UNKNOWN (ON 16MM + LIVE SCORE BY FISCAL HARM)
(1927, USA, Tod Browning)

An armless knife-thrower. A woman terrified of a man’s touch. A love story of almost unimaginable perversity.

In a travelling circus, Alonzo the Armless (Lon Chaney) astonishes audiences with his ability to hurl knives using only his feet. But beneath his extraordinary act lies a terrible secret. When he falls hopelessly in love with Nanon (a young Joan Crawford), the ringmaster’s daughter whose pathological fear of men’s hands makes Alonzo her seemingly perfect suitor, his obsession sets in motion a chain of events as grotesque as they are tragic.

One of silent cinema’s most gloriously twisted masterpieces, THE UNKNOWN is a fever dream of sexual obsession, jealousy, mutilation and monstrous sacrifice. Directed by Tod Browning, who would later unleash FREAKS upon the world, it’s a carnival nightmare in which love becomes a form of madness and the human body a battleground of desire. Chaney gives one of the most extraordinary performances of his career, hurtling towards a climax of almost unbearable cruelty and savage irony.

Nearly a century old and still capable of leaving audiences open-mouthed, THE UNKNOWN is a genuine don’t-miss experience on the big screen.

Presented on an original 16mm print with a specially performed live score by @fiscal.harm. With animation by @wycarson.art

THE UNKNOWN on 16mm with live score by Fiscal Harm returns this October

On the lam, criminal Alonzo hides in the circus as The Armless Wonder, a performer who uses his feet to hurl knives. Alonzo keeps the arms he really has concealed to hide his identity. Meanwhile, ringmaster’s daughter Nanon has a phobia of being touched by men, but is romantically pursued by not only Alonzo but the strongman Malabar. Alonzo’s desperation to remain with Nanon will only end in tragedy.

Lon Chaney delivers a striking silent performance defined by physical transformation and expressive intensity, anchoring a dark carnival set gothic melodrama by the director of FREAKS.

Sunday 18th October
4.30pm and 6.20pm
Tickets at THENICKEL.co.uk

In this previous year, you would’ve found Zonbi playing across land, across borders, this music they once crafted in tiny soundproofed rooms. Once witnessed by a sole broken man, this music has now been performed to hundreds of souls, souls who didn’t even speak their language, most who would never understand their words. Zonbi performing and tracing in the imperceptible, a deep connection linking one another, An understanding of where one begins and ends. Like limbs reattaching themselves together.
(Membres/Members)
A strum, a pluck, a hit, a blow, a sound. The sound.

Music is the simplest art for a human to make. Out of nothing, a melody, a rythm, a lyric can be made. You could brush your hand through air and catch the music with your bare hands, or feel its vibrations through you feet, its warmth in your chest.
To make music out of something demands attention.
To make music out of something with others demands connection. We’re all animals in a cage of societal conditioning, a cage isolating us from others, from ourselves. An animal unheard, muted by it’s lack of language.
To make music out with others is conversation. 1/2

The known, the format, are only there to guide you. But with will, boundaries can easily be pushed. And here, in a perfect haven in a gentrifying fishing town, in an eerily empty concert hall where the floor should stick with beer stains, and the light should be on the stage and not on the floor,
In this place where music is engrained in every inch of the walls, where lovers once danced after choosing each other,

Zonbi crafts once more.
And boundaries
Are touched, pushed, broken.
Almost everyone needed is reunited here (And the absent one is present in their minds)
To chase sounds on divine horses lead by this newfound synergy
To tell new and old stories on tamed rhythms soaked in ancient textures
To recapture and readapt old genres that flow like blood through the roots of a home country
To translate to listenable form the raw emotions and rage inhabiting the inner anim
