🎂 TONIGHT AT 7! Free Reading of THE CAKE by Bekah Brunstetter at The Smith Theatre! Meet Director, Al Monaco! SGT: Favorite kind of cake? AM: I like vanilla cake SGT: Tell us about THE CAKE! AM: The Cake is an honest look at small town life and beliefs that have not, up to this point, been challenged. Where is the line between what is right and what is right for you? SGT: Is there a character you most relate to? AM: I relate to Macy and Jen. Like Macy, I like to have all of the knowledge and facts to make educated decisions, to live my life unapologetically and to be authentically myself. And like Jen, I think we all can relate to having outgrown our hometown but having that soft spot in our hearts for the loved ones we still have living back home even if our values don’t align anymore. It’s not easy having the tough conversations. But being true to yourself is what is important. Jen does that. SGT: Why should audiences come and see THE CAKE? AM: The Cake is a perfect launching pad for difficult discussions around personal beliefs and how they are inflicted upon and can hurt others. When is it time leave the behind the people you love but you’ve outgrown? Tonight's event is FREE, but pre-registration is required at www.secondgenerationtheatre.com/free-reading-series Join us after for a discussion and a slice of cake from Buffalo Cake Pops in honor of our friend and constant reading patron, Bill Schmidt. 🎂 #bekahbrunstetter #thecakeplay #freereadingseries #2ndgentheatre #Buffalotheatre #sheassmiththeatre

SGT's free reading of THE CAKE by Bekah Brunstetter is coming up on Monday 6/12! Get to know the cast! Alex Watts plays MACY SGT:What's your favorite kind of cake ? AW: Wegmans marble cake with buttercream frosting, pleaseeeeeeee. SGT: Do you bake? AW: Absolutely! I used to bake cookies for my family for Christmas all of the time and every fall, I bake an exceptional Pumpkin Roll. SGT: Describe Macy. AW: CEO of intersectional accountability. SGT: Describe THE CAKE in 1 sentence. AW: Silly, sappy, and real. SGT: What character do you relate to most/why ? AW: I really relate to Macy. She’s bold, doesn’t care what people think, and she needs the authentic truth to be out there. SGT: Why should people come and see THE CAKE? AW: This show is phenomenal as it manages to stay light on its feet while also bravely discussing topics that would easily divide lesser men. If you want to laugh, come see this show. If you want to watch characters really grow, come see this show. If you’ve ever struggled at Thanksgiving with what to say to family members who think differently than you, come see this show. It’s good!! Sabrina Kahwaty plays Jen! SGT: What's your favorite cake? SK: Red velvet 😍 SGT: Do you bake? SK: Sometimes! I grew up making chocolate chip cookies with my mom and still have the recipe memorized. At Christmastime, I always bake with my mom; this year when we were snowed in and couldn't get to her house, I made peanut butter blossoms on my own! I have never attempted cake though... SGT: Describe Jen. SK: Optimistic, type A, good-hearted dreamer. SGT: Describe THE CAKE in one sentence. SK: What do we do when our minds and hearts are at war? SGT: Who do you most relate to? SK: I definitely relate to Jen the most, not only because of our shared love for sharpies, schedules, and tabs, but because of her deep-rooted desire to make sure the people around her are taken care of and her commitment to seeing the best in others. SGT: Why should people see THE CAKE? SK: THE CAKE is an honest, thought-provoking, and relevant play that invites important conversation. (Plus, it's funny!)
