POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Apparently the only place left without ads is a book.

On Friday, at a book fair in Abu Dhabi, I saw something that stayed with me much longer than I expected.

Students from a university in Lebanon @aubmediterraneo had turned experiences of belonging, migration and living with conflict into illustrated books, drawings, games and even new words.

One woman there said something striking: when danger becomes part of everyday life, people start joking about it. They make games out of it. They invent expressions. They laugh.

Not because it is funny.

But because sometimes the human mind has to make the unbearable ordinary enough to survive it.

My grandmother told me people did exactly the same during the Second World War.

And I suddenly thought about how extraordinary human creativity is. Some of our most beautiful expressions are born not only from joy, curiosity or freedom, but also from the need to remain psychologically alive when reality becomes too much.

We turn fear into language.
Displacement into stories.
Absurdity into humour.
Memory into art.

Maybe that is also why books still matter so much to me.

A book does not interrupt you with an advertisement. It does not ask you to scroll. It does not need to win your attention every three seconds.

It simply gives an experience enough space to become meaning.

Sometimes creating is not an escape from reality.
It is how we remain human inside it.

The Lebanese Experiment is an animated history of a unique experiment in Arab modernity, tracing the making of modern Lebanon from the early twentieth century to independence.

From the heart of Beirut, where newspapers, radio, cinema, advertising, music, and popular culture flourished, the film follows the political and social transformations that accompanied the emergence of the Lebanese Republic.

But rather than telling history only through its great figures and defining events, it looks to the small details that set those events in motion, and to the images, sounds, and stories through which people came to understand them.

Here, political struggle meets popular culture: speeches and manifestos encounter poems, songs, films, and photographs.

The film explores how these forms of expression became more than reflections of history.

They were themselves forces that shaped political consciousness, mobilized communities, and imagined new possibilities.
