Friendly reminder: Saturday is Election Day! Your vote shapes the city we all share, and that includes the local spots you love. We’d ask you to keep small businesses in mind when you vote.

Over the last five years, we’ve watched too many of our neighbours in the small business community struggle, and some have had to close their doors for good. They’re the heart and soul of our city, and their future is on the ballot this weekend.

Think about the places that make our city feel like home:

• Your local cafe who knows your quirky order
• That magical bookstore recommending your next read
• Your go-to restaurants with that one dish they make better than anywhere
• The curated secondhand shop where you find that unique piece you’ve dreamed of
• The barbershop or hair salon who know just how to cut your hair so that it falls perfectly
• The family mechanic you trust
• The bike shop keeping you tuned up
• Your independent grocer with the local goods and the pet store that knows your furry friend likes a sweet potato treat

To survive, these spaces need a mayor and council who actively look after them. When you’re weighing your choices, look for candidates who support ideas like:

• Commercial rent caps to help your favourite independent businesses from being priced out
• Affordable or free parking options for our customers to keep main streets accessible
• Penalties for landlords who leave spaces empty instead of renting at affordable rates
• Safety measures like security grants and vandalism rebates, to protect your retail neighbourhoods against crime

Local elections directly impact the survival of your favourite spots. Not sure where candidates stand? Check their platforms, look at candidate surveys and all-candidates forums or ask them directly about small business support. Whoever you choose, please vote this Saturday. Let’s make sure the next four years include helping our local shops thrive, not watching more of them close.

Golden hour with the best team ✨

Fall is a season of transition — a time of change. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Davita Miles began a season of healing and found herself returning to the earth, gathering clay from the bottom of the lake on her family’s property. As she shaped the clay, a woman emerged and that first sculpture changed everything. A nurse and mother of twins, she is also the artist behind Terra Vita, creating sculptures from wild-harvest clay that are inspired by the female form. Her work explores resilience, transformation and the stories our bodies carry. Learn more about her story at artofterravita.com
