The official poster for @AndThenEverythingFilm, designed by Paris-based artist and longtime internet friend @celiecadieux.

Célie and I have been following each other since 2020, and it always felt like it was only a matter of time before we eventually got to collaborate. After admiring her work for years, I’d say it was worth the wait 🧩

Proud to have made this film with the support of the @latinofilminstitute_ and @netflix.

Day 4 of @AndThenEverythingFilm. Our final day of production.

Without giving too much away, there’s a scene at the very end of our film where we needed to flood a bathroom. I wrote this scene last August when I was invited to apply to this fellowship, and I vividly remember thinking “eh, I’ll figure out how to do this if I end up getting into the program”.

Then I got into the program.

Without exception, this was the most complicated thing I’ve ever had to do for any of my films. Right away, I knew that nobody was going to let us flood their bathroom with thousands of gallons of water, and rightfully so. It’s too risky and not worth the trouble. We had to get creative if we wanted to pull this off.

My dad is the world’s greatest problem solver, and when I approached him for advice on how to do this, he immediately suggested we build the bathroom inside of an 8x20 storage container. They’re made of reinforced corten steel, so that water wasn’t going anywhere.

And that’s what we did. Over the holidays, the storage container was purchased, I found affordable toilets, urinals, tile, etc. on Facebook Marketplace, and we got to work. We also bought a 3,000 gallon pool, placed it right next to the container, and used a special pump to get all of the water inside. Hardly a drop of it was spilled. It worked perfectly.

If I’m lucky enough to keep making movies in the future, the experience of building this bathroom and shooting this scene is one that’ll stay with me forever. It was challenging beyond belief and humid as all hell inside of the container, but we had a blast doing it. Indie filmmaking will lead you to do the craziest things.

(P.S. all the credit goes to my dad, the contractors he hired, and my family for helping me with this scene. I owe them my life, and quite frankly, my career).

Day 3 of @AndThenEverythingFilm

In our story, birthmarks represent who you are and how you died in a past life. We created a fake government agency called the Office of Personal History (OPH) that randomly summons people every single day to have the origin of their birthmark investigated. Think of it like jury duty + a cancer screening + a parole hearing— you’re obligated to go, and the OPH agents want to see if your “blood is good”. If you were an evil, awful person in some other life, OPH wants to know how much of that past life karmically carried over to today (the present) so they can make a subjective assement about your potential for violence, crime, danger, etc. They want to know who walks amongst them, past and present.

Knowing that, because we were filming at Dallas City Hall, we wanted a brutalist inspired logo that matched the aesthetic and architecture of the building. Day 3 was our “intake” day, where those who were summoned had to fill out some papework, get their birthmarks photographed, answer some very personal questions, and sit in a waiting room before being called in for their investigation.

Those who fail their assesment are forced to wear a tracker around their ankle so that OPH can keep an eye on you at all times, and we bought some cool ankle monitors off of eBay that I believe are meant to monitor your BAC, but they looked perfect for what we needed.

The most important component to all of this was finding folks with different kinds of birthmarks, and we have to give all the credit to @legacycasting_global for finding the most wonderful people to be a part of our world and being so willing to show their unique birthmarks on-camera. Everyone had their own version of a story they told themselves about their birthmark, and it was so lovely to get to meet and chat with all of them individually. To those that joined us, I extend a sincere thank you for letting us show the world what makes each of you special. We can’t wait for you to see the film.

Day 2 of @AndThenEverythingFilm

This was our big day of world-building at Dallas City Hall, and I don’t think any of us were fully prepared for just how much of a beast this building would actually be. Most of this day involved our main character Lázaro walking through the facility to get to where he needed to. We were filming on a Saturday, which meant the building would be empty, so we had to bring in over 50+ background talent to populate the space and make it feel alive. I have to give our production team @lizette_barrera_, @blueseachel, and @esmeraldoe a major shout out for creating a system that allowed for people to park their car, check in, go to where they needed to, and get fitted for the day in such a massive building. This was a massive undertaking and we could have not survived a day like this without them.

I also have to thank the folks that came out to be our background talent for the day, most of whom were volunteering their time, had never been on a film set before, and/or were friends and family of mine. Y’all could be doing anything else in the world on a Saturday, and you chose to spend your day being there for me and my team to help make our world feel real. I simply don’t have a movie if it weren’t for the great work you did, and I’m eternally grateful for your contributions. I hope this was a fun and memorable experience for all of you.

We had over 175 extras on the set of my last film, so I went into the day feeling confident, but Dallas City Hall will quickly humble any filmmaker that dares to take it on. With 8 floors and tons of long hallways, getting around the building and having to direct dozens of folks from several floors up or down was something that I really had to ease in to. Thankfully, our AD team @hardentyler01 @kais.marz and the rest of our PAs were always flying and directing traffic like the pros that they are. Thanks for killing it, y’all.

What else? This was my first time directing a child, which was a new experience for me. We ended the day in a freight elevator, so that was also pretty cool. More to come!
