NATURAL SCIENCES Embryo issue #6. Pale World and Y Gwacter interview for @negative_output @naturalsciencesrecs. DM me for the full interview.

Can you give Embryo a quick origin story for anyone new to your work?

Joe Parkes [Pale World]: I started Pale World back in 2013, which was predominately ambient and continued to go down a harsh noise trajectory (following a collaboration with Blackcloudsummoner in 2020), performing live and releasing material on labels such as Brachliegen Tapes, Outsider Art and Venalism.

Angharad Jones [Y Gwacter]: I'm a visual artist and started collaborating with Joe last year. We combine our disciplines to create textural noise compositions derived from live painting in real time.

Joe: Pale World and Y Gwacter is a new project and a step into new territory. I was inspired by a collaboration between Shredded Nerve and Jackson-Pratt. There was a clip I saw of them both painting on contact mic’d canvases and this was used as the main source of the sound. Angharad was on board and brings her own take to painting live.

Are there any major themes running through your work?

Angharad: There’s strong themes around cyclical reflection and its documentation. Our respective practices are very introspective, it’s interesting to see how they come together in one form when we’re together. The project delivers an inter-disciplinary loop between sight and sound, each informing the other, in a performance that documents itself.

Negative Output line up shows a healthy noise scene, but what are your thoughts on it in general and what gets your blood pumping?

Joe: It's a very exciting time for noise. I’m grateful to be able to meet artists that inspired my work, such as FLAW, where I met Joe Roamer. His approach to making Noise has been a massive influence and getting to chat to him and experience the OVMN set was life affirming.

Angharad: There’s so much innovation, and a real resurgence of new projects alongside our favourite pioneers. Promoters also play a critical role in contributing to a healthy noise scene- it’s important that they showcase diversity in their line-ups and Negative Output have shown meaningful curation here.
