POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

With all that is happening in Europe now, it's good time that we ought to (re)read V for Vendetta. I'm appreciating so much more now after some 20 years but can't complain. Best bit is that since then I've read V. (and everything else) from Thomas Pynchon so I get more references.

My new hypothesis, however, is that proooobably MF DOOM was inspired by V for Vendetta particularly for Vaudeville Villain by Viktor Vaughn (see pictures that may suggest that in my view). If this is the case, then we also have the way in which DOOM is also connected to Pynchon via Moore!

By the way, it only occurred to me while scrolling yesterday that Operation: Doomsday and The Clerks share the same release date. And Vaudeville Villain namechecks Silent Bob. So there we are.

Cool summer memories drinking the stellar Double Damnation double IPA with citra by Holy Goat Brewing - excellent matching art by Shindy Keehal.

Can’t think of Anderson without thinking of Barry Kitson. His run defined the character for me. A small tribute to the master. 🙏

Is Swamp Thing issue 34, Rite of Spring, the most beautiful comic book ever written? Alan Moore and Stephen Bissette turn an unlikely love story between Abby Arcane and Swamp Thing into something extraordinary. Through breathtaking artwork, psychedelic imagery and experimental storytelling, this issue explores love, connection and what it means to see the world through someone else’s eyes. A perfect example of why comic books are such a powerful art form. Have you ever read a comic that genuinely changed the way you see things?

Note biographique :

Saga Of The Swamp Thing Book Three by Alan Moore. 10/10. Unsurprisingly, this continues to knock it out of the ballpark. Good expansion on lore, great art, the introduction of Constantine, and a depthening of Abby and Alec’s relationship. I truly love this series. #swampthing #sagaoftheswampthing #alanmoore #dcblacklabel #stephenbissette

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is today’s read.

From the mind of Alan Moore comes a steampunk, gothic horror, mystery and action hybrid. We find ourselves in Victorian England at the turn of the Industrial Revolution, where characters from various pulp fiction novels, such as Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, Sherlock Holmes and more, band together to tackle threats to the British Empire.

Alan Moore’s world-building here is an absolute masterclass in modern fiction. While some of the more obscure references probably fly under the radar, the world Moore has created is deeply thought out, extremely layered and incredibly well lived-in. There’s plenty of action, humour and introspection, all paced well. There are also plenty of feminist undercurrents in this deconstruction of the usual superpowered team-ups, which is refreshing to see in male-dominated fiction.

That said, this book does feature some poorly conceived racial stereotypes that haven’t aged well.

The pencils by Kevin O’Neill are wonderful. Highly stylised linework, with a huge emphasis on expression and a jagged finish, helps create this rich world.

The colours by Ben Dimagmaliw are moody and help convey the tone of the story, all while maintaining distinct palettes between set pieces.

One huge highlight for me was the lettering by Bill Oakley, whose authentic Victorian lettering styles help ground the story in its setting and add character to the world.

Overall, I loved this and would recommend it to comic fans, though I’d note that it can be rather dark in parts and does feature some negative racial stereotypes.

Here is day 8 of inktober. The prompt was "STINKY", and I chose to draw Rorschach from the graphic novel Watchmen. He is told to be a very smelly guy in the comics by multiple people and I always thought his character design was very interesting and wanted to take a crack at it. Not my best work, but I'm happy with it.
