Dance in the Dark – Music by Lady Gaga

Part raw documentary and part stylized theatrics, this short experimental film captures a fragment of the emotional process, tension, release, and exploration of what it means to be a woman today.

For me, this was a film that was challenging but extremely fulfilling on a technical level, but especially on a personal level.

Defining femininity for me proved to be a big challenge at the beginning. I wanted to capture a feeling that has been with me for a while, but I wasn’t quite sure how to express it. Around that time, I was doing a deep dive into some of Lady Gaga’s lesser-known music and came across this incredible song I had never heard before – “Dance in the Dark.” It became one of those songs you listen to over and over again until you’re sick of it. Except, for some reason, I never was.

It was the kind of song that tested my limits of understanding and emotion, juxtaposing eroticism and lust with darkness and pain. Something we all view as fun or exciting within the context of beauty (pretty face, pretty life, right?) may not match what is truly happening underneath. Beauty, pleasure, and providing emotional ease are so strongly associated with how a woman is expected to present herself, and Lady Gaga is somehow able to twist these expectations into a song that expresses a feeling I’ve had throughout my short adult life – the feeling that I, and many of the female-identifying peers I’ve had the privilege of knowing, are stuck within a constructed facade of who we should be, in order to mask complex human suffering.

Lady Gaga’s choices in this piece of music capture this paradox very well, and I wanted to explore it further by bringing my own truth to her song and sharing that process with the wonderful actors you see in this film.

I encourage you to focus on our faces, the stories they tell, and the way we move. Perhaps you will find your own source of liberation, just as I did while making this film. Above all, I learned from this project that I wasn’t alone in what I felt.
