🇵🇸 Rebuilding Dental Education in Gaza

In August, our CEO, Dr Khaleda Zaheer, travelled to Gaza our dental education project, in partnership with @palmedacademy_ which she has been leading for the past two years.

Having worked in refugee camps and humanitarian crises around the world, Dr Khaleda described her experience in Gaza as unlike anything she had witnessed before.

During her visit, she met with university leadership and dental students to see first-hand the progress made towards rebuilding dental education, despite the immense challenges.

After two years of dedication, collaboration and the generosity of our donors, it was an incredibly proud and emotional moment to witness students returning to their education.

Students described putting on their white coats again after a two-year closure as feeling “reborn, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.”

We are proud to announce a new partnership with @heal.palestine to continue supporting the education and oral healthcare system in Gaza. 🇵🇸❤️

REMINDER, HAPPENING TOMORROW | This World Food Day, join us for an important discussion on food security in an age of overlapping crises.

What happens when climate extremes, conflict, rising fuel and food prices, water insecurity and inequality collide? And how can research help us anticipate and respond to the consequences?

Join the DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) for “When shocks collide: Food security in an age of polycrisis”, a webinar examining the interconnected threats facing food systems, particularly in South and Southern Africa.

Our keynote speaker, Dr Ahmed Abu Shaban, of Al-Azhar University–Gaza and McGill University, Canada, will deliver an address titled ‘Food-System Vulnerability and Community Power: Lessons from Gaza’.

A multidisciplinary panel will then explore the implications for Southern Africa, using El Niño as an immediate case study and drawing on expertise in governance, agricultural resilience, innovation, nutrition and food safety.

The webinar will also mark the launch of the CoE-FS Food Crisis Advisory Group, bringing together researchers to strengthen evidence-informed preparedness, response and mitigation of food-related crises.

Friday, 16 October 2026 | 12h00–14h00 SAST | Zoom

Registration is free and open to all. Register via the link in our bio.
