Step into the Patagonian woods 🌲✨

This is a brief, improvised lullaby with @albertomagnin on kora (which he made himself) and me on voice, recorded on a cell phone (sorry 😅).

Save it for when your nervous system needs soothing — or send it to someone who could use a little love today. 💌

🎧 My album Heartsong was born from many hours of sessions like these, so if you like this, do check it out - available on all streaming platforms.

@albertomagnin and I stopped to improvise after kayaking for hours on Lake Epuyen a few summers back. This is a special spot you can only reach by water.

There’s something about being in nature, especially in untouched, virgin areas, that facilitates music.

I would say it facilitates music in a different way than, say, improvising in an apartment building.

Not better, not worse—different. Music, like any language, needs innovation to stay alive and keep evolving. I feel that connection to innovation and expansion so much more deeply when playing in nature.

In fact, whenever I have creative block, I go to nature.

🌲 📌 Save this video for whenever you need to sit for a while, away from it all, in a forest in Patagonia -- or send it to someone who would enjoy doing so.

Place yourself on the banks of a glistening river in the beautiful serenity of Patagonia and enjoy this moment of improvisation which @albertomagnin and I filmed several years ago.

Alberto is a great friend, teacher, and fellow adventurer. We have carried our instruments across many a lake, occasionally capsizing, but always having fun.

What place in nature do you think of when you hear this? 🩵

Many of the major influences of the EP Heartsong, which I am releasing now, are pictured here. One of the most important is not, however--and it’s an injury.

I tore my intercostals in three places and was essentially bedridden for 9 months. I could not sing. I could not really move. Life stopped me right where I was, which happened to be in a little cabin nestled in the mountains, surrounded by lovely neighbors, several flocks of sheep, and pain.

This pause produced, as these things are wont to do, a certain degree of recalibration.

I learned to play the lyre. I let it sing for me.

When I was recovered enough to move, I went to California for the first time in five years and the first time since I’d moved to Patagonia.

I promptly got stuck there as flights were cancelled due to Covid-19. In California, I absorbed an energy that is not present, for better or for worse, in great amounts in Argentina--an electric, can-do energy charged with innovation and conviction.

My parents had an out of tune piano in the house. Technically speaking, that’s where this EP truly began. Without realizing it, I started drawing together a longstanding interest in #minimalist music, my immersion in Middle Eastern—specifically Iranian—Indian and Egyptian approaches to sound, hours spent attending every contemporary classical concert I could get tickets to in Prague in my 20s, and the more recent, boundaries-blurring experience running a remote mountain refuge in the Andes during the winter months, which most days left me largely alone with only my voice, the river, the trees, and the song of Nature herself for company.

Two distinct paths of my life thus converged: the path of song and the path of expression—communicating the search for meaning, love of beauty, openness to healing, and connection to Nature.

Welcome to Heartsong 🩵
