49 participants. 25 countries. 15 days of Suzuki training in Toga, Japan, with Ellen Lauren and Mattia Sebastian. What an honor.

I bonded heart to heart with beautiful artists from around the world as we returned to our bodies. The training was rigorous. Vulnerable. Powerful.

I was first introduced to the Suzuki Method during my MFA at USD (@globeusdmfa), when Ellen (@ellenlauren1461) came to lead a workshop. We stomped in a circle — one of the fundamental movements of Suzuki — and something in me awakened.

Ellen spoke about traditions in Japan and globally of stomping to connect with the earth: to awaken spirits, receive a message, and communicate it through speech to an outside presence. I cried hearing her describe it. It made me think of my Japanese grandmother.

Returning to Japan is already emotional for me. My grandmother devoted her life to Japanese culture and artistry. To return, connect so deeply with my body, and train alongside artists of so many nationalities — all gathered in Japan around a Japanese theatrical practice — moved me tremendously.

So grateful for the people, the work, and Toga.

Attending this training was made possible by an artist grant from Asian Hall of Fame (@asianhalloffame), supporting early-career artists and cross-cultural initiatives.

It’s really all about this. Meeting old and new friends in beautiful places.

Like having some spiked granitas after rehearsals for the Brunello Cucinelli show in Modica, Sicily.
