Many thanks to @sccpgh, @where_daisy_had_her_puppies, Mark at Butternut Bend Tree Farm, and all the folks who joined in to plant a bunch of trees and shrubs, and pull a lot of invasive weeds, this past Monday. Thanks to all their work, the stretch of land that is Floodplain Studios continues to gradually transform into an ecologically healthy space for people, plants and animals fo enjoy.

It was a beautiful day at Floodplain Studios!

They’re developing an 8-acre stretch of land along the Great Allegheny Passage, just outside of Pittsburgh, where people can go to be creative in nature. If you love art and being outdoors, make sure to link up on their page, so that you can get involved! Shout out to Faye Miller, for constantly challenging our region to be creative and sustainable. It was plenty of fun to plant trees and remove invasive species.

We couldn’t let teacher appreciation week pass us by without saying THANK YOU to all of the instructors out there who have worked with us at Contemporary Craft.

There are and have been so many talented teaching artists that bring their skills and time to our students, and for that we are so very grateful!

We’re walking along at the folk festival and spot a guy who looks a lot like @albertpantone, so I asked if I could take a picture of him to send to Albert. Turns out he has no idea who Albert is, but he knows me! I know his son. My dad took a photo of him holding a flower on fourth street in 1962 that he still has. Crazy. He’s Jack Thompson the barber’s dad. Somebody from the old school should tag him on this.

Let's learn how to make our own paper!

Join us at Assemble for our monthly 21+ Night! Workshop tickets include drinks, snacks, all project materials, and a completed project for you to take home!

Our guest expert this month is Albert Pantone! For the past 25 years Pantone has worked with Japanese Knotweed, one of the Northeast’s most invasive and destructive weeds. Through the paper making process he deconstructs and transforms these aggressive, stubborn, nearly impossible-to-eliminate plants and tames them into delicate sheets of paper.

In this workshop, you will get hands-on with the texture, natural color, and unpredictability of wet pulp. From there, you can add natural elements such as wildflower seeds, dried petals, and grasses, as well as a selection of colored pulps to enhance the paper. As you manipulate the pulp, you can create flat two-dimensional sheets or even create three-dimensional sculptural works! You will get to use all these processes to create your own paper, and even learn some of the history of paper making while we're at it!
