POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Some books are difficult to read because of the heartfelt reality behind them. Due to that reality, I’m grateful books like this one exist.

In the wake of the recent school shooting in Oregon, sharing this book feels especially important.

•After: A Survivor’s Story•

tells the story of a young girl trying to make sense of life following an unimaginable tragedy. She survived “The Horrible Day,” but her friend Wes did not. And while the adults around her try to offer comfort, they can’t fully understand the fear, grief, and guilt she carries. How it’s impossible to feel safe again when you’ve learned how quickly things can change.

I can’t help but think about the children, families, and communities whose lives have been forever changed by school shootings. Children should be worrying about homework, friendships, and what they’ll do at recess. They should never have to worry about whether they’ll make it home from school every day.

As a teacher, I shouldn’t have to remind my students to shut the door to help keep us safe or to look out the window before answering the door.

And yet, here we are. Again.

•After• is a story about trauma, survivor’s guilt, community, and the courage it takes to speak up. It’s also a reminder that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting those we’ve lost.

I wish books like this didn’t have to exist. I wish stories like this felt unimaginable instead of painfully familiar. Until every child can walk into a classroom without fear, these are conversation we need to keep having.

I never want to share this book list again. It is absolutely horrifying how many children need these books, and how relevant the books on this list continue to be.

And yet people will still continue to lobby against gun regulation, and we will continue to fail the children.

My heart is with all of the Silver Rail Elementary School children and families in Bend, Oregon. When they are ready, I hope the books on this list can help them begin to process their trauma, and support them as they take the steps toward healing.

As always, I hate that these books exist, but I am so grateful they do.
