“Michel George El-Raheb owns a small book shop and café in the city of Jaffa called Yafa Cafe. Facing mounting challenges in running the shop, he calls upon his nephew, film producer Tony Copti, to partner with him. While looking to buy books for the shop, Tony ends up on an eye-opening journey that forces him and his uncle to become book smugglers. The process brings him to question where Jaffa’s books have disappeared to after the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation, known to Palestinians as the Nakba. ‘The Smugglers’ is an absurd reflection of Israel’s ongoing oppression of Arabic language and Palestinian culture.”

Directed by Tony Copti and Yaniv Berman. Runtime: 1h26m.

🎬 Up next: “Coexistence, My Ass!” Starring Noam Shuster-Eliassi

Activate your 48-hour viewing window anytime between November 7–17, then join us on November 15 at 4:00 PM ET for a live Zoom conversation with the film’s executive producer and Albi founder and CEO, Libby Lenkinski.

“Coexistence, My Ass!” (directed by Amber Fares) follows Israeli activist-comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi as she creates a comedy show by the same name. Shot over five tumultuous years, the film traces Noam’s journey in tandem with the region’s steady deterioration. Raised in the only intentionally integrated Israeli-Palestinian community in the country, Noam grows disillusioned with traditional peace activism and pivots to stand-up comedy. But as her star rises, everything around her falls apart. With biting satire, Noam pushes her audiences to face difficult truths that remind us that another reality is possible.

There's a groundswell of audience demand for access to more documentaries about pressing social and political issues - about Israel, Palestine, and beyond. So why are distributors still scared?

We are encouraged by today's news that @neonrated will distribute NAZA, and the massively expansive conversations around Nathan Fielder & Lance Oppenheim's film YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING, which all expand access to these films and get more people talking about documentaries.

We need more brave documentaries distributed, not less.

Thanks to Brian Welk at @indiewire for this excellent reporting on how independent films like @holdingliat, @thevoiceofhindrajabfilm, @nootherland.film, @coexistencemyass, @americandoctorfilm, @askejeanfilm, @putyoursoulonyourhand.film and @mr.nobodyagainstputin have navigated distributor fears and found creative ways to directly reach audiences to have an impact in the world.
