Water Occurs Naturally
—————————————————————
When there is a temperature difference between the outside ambient air and inside, moisture begins to collect just from being in your RV and breathing. Windows, the outside skin of our Airstream (I also assume inside the walls as well) all start collecting water. It starts as just a little mist but can quickly become beads of water and over time this can lead to wood rot in the floors, cabinets, and walls.
•
So what can be done to mitigate this potential problem? If the water collecting is small and the outside air temps are enjoyable, you can simply just crack the windows and allow more air flow. Start with the one closest to you and your pets. If moisture still collects in other windows, then crack the ones that have water. Air flow matters, so you can leave bathroom and shower fans on as well as any ceiling vents. AC is also a natural dehumidifier and a simple solution to this problem during the summer.
•
This typically isn’t possible when it’s very cold outside. Running your heater adds more moisture and the issue is greater when you close your blinds or privacy shades as well. That’s when a dehumidifier comes into play. We recommend as large of a unit as you feel comfortable running. We use a 22 pint unit that is good for a 1500 sq foot house, it fits in our closet during the summer months when it’s not in use and plugs in and runs under our dinette in the winter months. When it’s really bad, we have actually filled up this unit a couple times in a day… that’s a lot of water!
•
You can find links to our Amazon store in our bio to the specific unit but in general there are a ton of good options available out there — what ever you do, don’t count on a little table top unit that fills up overnight or in a couple of hours. Too small and you’ll still have moisture on the windows. With this big guy, we see zero moisture on our windows!
•
Bonus tip: we just learned that dehumidifiers need air temps to be in the high 50s or low 60s to work! So don’t be afraid to run your heat at a comfortable level.
