Barbie’s (Second) First Day of Physician Assistant School! 💖🎀🩺

Kayla Monét Medley PA-S2 C’O 2027

On January 15, 2025 I found out my breast cancer that I was previously treated for has returned and was metastatic. It spread to my brain, liver, lungs, bones - everywhere. I was gutted especially since I just began my second year of PA school on January 6, 2025. I couldn’t fly home at the time because I had excessive fluids in my lungs and was experiencing SOB on exertion so my best friends packed up my car and immediately packed up my apartment and drove me 10 hours all the way from Nashville to Maryland so I could return home to my parents and to receive treatment.

Over 2025 I have went through numerous treatments and procedures and scans and lessons and blessings and despite everything I am grateful for it all. I’m grateful for the love that God covers me in, I’m grateful for all of the support that I have from my parents, my family, my personal village 💖🙏🏽 I am grateful for my health today and my care team, that my scans are clear and I am able to return to @meharrypaprogram and faculties support and love every step of the way. I am grateful I get another chance to do what I love and change lives. My why is for advocacy and for changing the healthcare scene especially as someone who has personally experienced disparities that could have caused my life several times.

Thank you so much @maureenumehtv @fox5dc @awcaa allowing me the opportunity to share my story again!

And most importantly I want to thank God for his protection over my life and completely transforming my health in less than a year.

Here’s to 2026 - in a new space, prosperity, health, abundance, BOUNDARIES and most importantly - love. Always lead with love. 💗

We are so excited to announce our second winner of the 2024 NSBPA PA Legacy and Leadership Scholarship! Congrats to A’lea Richardson, PA-S (@aleamrich )

A’lea is a first-year PA student in the Class of 2026 at Meharry Medical College’s Physician Assistant Sciences program in Nashville, TN. Born and raised in Alachua, Florida, A’lea developed a passion for healthcare and community service during her undergraduate studies at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Before starting PA school, she gained valuable hands-on experience as a medical assistant, working in specialties including Family Medicine, Pediatrics, OBGYN, Urgent Care, and Plastic Surgery. Throughout her PA-S journey, A’lea has been actively involved in giving back to her community by volunteering with the ArtSpeaks Non-Profit Organization, mentoring high school girls, assisting with after-school programs, educating elementary students on heart health, participating in the GOALS event, organizing food drives, and volunteering with the Nashville Diaper Connection. A’lea is dedicated to making a meaningful impact in underserved communities and aspire to specialize in Family Medicine. Her goal is to improve access to high-quality healthcare for marginalized populations by addressing health disparities, promoting preventive care, and educating patients on managing chronic conditions. A’lea also plans to mentor and encourage future pre-PAs from underrepresented backgrounds. Ultimately, A’lea hopes to become a trusted healthcare advocate, fostering strong relationships with her patients and helping reduce the stigma and mistrust that some communities feel toward the healthcare system.
