Hyvää matkaa, Mikko Karmila 🕊️🤍 In English below ⬇️

Mikko Karmila was a cornerstone of the Finnish rock and heavy metal sound. His significance to the Finnish music scene cannot be overstated.

We, too, were granted the opportunity to record with Karmila. Here’s the back story:

In 2021, @rankakustannus launched a cover project where the label’s bands could record a song of their choice by BMTH and Blind Channel at the iconic @finnvoxstudios .

We chose ”And The Snakes Start To Sing” by BMTH and ”Alone Against All” by Blind Channel. It was a fun challenge to tackle songs that differed from our usual style and try to craft ”DIRT-esque” versions of them.

It was especially great to hear that Mikko Karmila would handle the recording duties.

When we arrived at Finnvox, Karmila had already been working full days for a couple of weeks on the other covers. We were the final band of the project, so — quite understandably — there was a hint of ”session fatigue” in the air at first.

However, once he heard that the recording would be done live in true DIRT style (the instrumental tracks would be recorded simultaneously without a click track and vocals and embellishments would be layered on top) — the tension melted away completely. After the first takes, the maestro was already smiling in his chair, remarking, ”Well… There’s really nothing to complain about here.”

When it started to look like we might finish ahead of schedule, Karmila said: ”The vibe is so good right now, I’m going to grab a beer.” That became a catchphrase that stuck in everyone’s minds.

Back then, Seba drove a beat-up Fiat Punto, and Karmila wanted hitch a ride to the Majava Bar right after the sessions. Unfortunately, there wasn’t room — the whole band was traveling in that car, and somehow, we had managed to cram all the instruments in there too.

Mikko Karmila left a lasting impression as a warm and extremely skilled person with a great sense of humor.

And the sound — despite a tight schedule that left little time to focus on a single band, let alone the finer details of the songs — he achieved outstanding results.

A legend of Finnish heavy music has left us too soon. Condolences to all his

@dirtbandofficial at @tavastiaklubi , the technicolor sessions
Every emotion, every mood, every song has its color and sometimes that color comes out only after we've experienced a certain event.
As you may or may not know, our aura changes color depending on our mood, energy level, spiritual level of consciousness, emotions we're feeling at the moment, energy within us and energy that doesn't come from us and that still affects our presence in this realm of reality
Color and music work more or less in the same way and are extremely connected and intertwined, that's why, in my work (be it painting, drawing, photography, styling and even modeling in general), color and the general flow are fundamental. That's also why I only wear certain colors, besides black of course (that's another story for another time).

For reasons known only to the universe, my schedule and @dirtbandofficial's gigs have been actively avoiding each other.

Yesterday, the universe finally decided to cooperate, and I caught them at Tavastia. About time. What a wild show.
