🔹Slices of #greece >>> curated by @melina.arvaniti.pollatou 🔹

#august in Greece is instinctively associated with the raw charm of the #vernacular. The endless blue of the #aegean sea weaves together a vast array of cultural traits, bridging antiquity and modernity, ruggedness and refinement, austerity and ornament. Primal cycladic forms—Tinian dovecotes, churches and Amorgian windmills—meet Chios’ geometric xysta (ξυστά), Symi’s mercantile neoclassicism, Hydra’s seafaring classicism, and Crete’s layered Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman past.

Applied across the compact stone houses of Pyrgi, the fortified mastic village of Chios, scratched-plaster xysta transform the façades of the medieval settlement into woven surfaces, often associated with the sgraffito traditions introduced through the Genoese presence. Bearing affinities with Byzantine decorative imagery as well, these patterns embody the island’s position between cultures, where Western and Eastern elements were absorbed into a distinctly local craft.

In Kastellorizo, maritime prosperity shaped an intensely coloured vernacularised, cosmopolitan Neoclassicism, combining classical symmetry and proportions with local construction, as well as Greek, Ottoman, Anatolian and Mediterranean influences. Similarly shaped by maritime wealth, Hydrian houses bring together Aegean vernacular traditions with neoclassical and Venetian influences, while compact volumes, tiled roofs, thick masonry and introverted courtyards respond to the island’s winds and intense sun.

In Lasithi, Crete, architecture unfolds as a palimpsest of centuries-old cultural layers, absorbed into a vernacular shaped by geology, agriculture, water management and defence.

Across these island geographies, brought together by wind and sea, history is not simply preserved—it remains embedded in the everyday fabric of the landscape. Here, the vernacular is not a relic but a living language, continually rewritten through materiality, use, and memory.

Behind a 1970s false ceiling, the Golden Hall of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum hid a piece of itself unseen for decades.

Preliminary investigations for the restoration, funded by the World Monuments Fund in its first Italian project, have brought to light the Grande Serliana: a monumental window overlooking the garden, with polychrome marble and bronze decorations.
Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli entrusted its design to Lodovico Pogliaghi and its creation to the bronzesmith Giuseppe Speluzzi.

"The restoration project begins with a careful analysis of documentary sources, archive documents from the Poldi Pezzoli House and historical images," explains Alessandra Quarto, director of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum.
