Yesterday marked one year since my second labrum repair surgery on my right shoulder, ending my baseball career. After having the past year to reflect, I am finally ready to say goodbye to the sport I played and loved for so long.

For years, I was lucky to play for my dad, who coached me through every challenge and shaped me into the player I became. Some of my best memories come from road trips, championships, and post-game meals.

My teammates made the game unforgettable. Some of my closest friends—teammates and opponents alike—include my roommate of four years.

Mama has been one of, if not my biggest supporter through the years. She was there at every win, at every home run, at every championship, but more importantly she was with me through the losses. If I needed a pre-game confidence boost she would be there, and if I needed to be reminded of why I play, she was there as well.

Toward the end of my first surgery recovery, my progress stalled—and even worsened. I found out right after Christmas 2023 that I tore my labrum for a second time, and required surgery. This would mean the end of my playing career, as there would be too high risk of reinjury if I tried to return to baseball.

At this point, I had become very frustrated with the sport, and had lost my love of the game. Now a year removed, there is nothing I wouldn’t do to get back out on the field.

College athletics is draining; mentally and physically, there is no doubt about it. For those who have the opportunity to play however, enjoy every day, because at some point we all have our final win, final game, final practice, final rep.

Cherish every moment, because one day, the game becomes a memory.
